About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. OpenTrain AI hires and contracts contributors for specialized projects where human expertise helps improve how advanced AI systems learn, reason, and respond.

  • Create a profile and apply through OpenTrain.
  • Build experience in a fast-growing field at the intersection of research and artificial intelligence.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Specialists review model outputs, define what high-quality answers look like, create evaluation tasks, and provide precise feedback that helps AI systems become more accurate and useful.

  • Apply deep subject-matter knowledge to challenging model evaluations.
  • Turn expert scientific judgment into clear standards and measurable criteria.
  • Contribute directly to the development of cutting-edge AI systems.

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a senior Life Sciences AI Training Expert to evaluate and improve how frontier AI models reason about real life sciences research. You will work with project research teams and specialists using dedicated research tools, with a focus on data quality assurance, instruction specifications, gold-standard solution writing, benchmark design, and calibration.

This is a full-time, hybrid role based in the Bay Area, California. The initial engagement lasts six months and requires 40 hours per week.

  • Focus areas may include molecular and cell biology, biochemistry, structural biology, immunology, immuno-oncology, genetics, genomics, neuroscience, or systems biology.
  • Use large language models hands-on as part of your professional work.

What You’ll Do

You will assess whether AI-generated life sciences work reflects genuine domain understanding rather than plausible-sounding errors. You will also help establish consistent evaluation standards across complex scientific tasks.

  • Review life sciences tasks and model outputs for quality and scientific accuracy.
  • Detect missing behaviors, mechanistic hand-waving, unsupported causal claims, and superficially plausible but incorrect answers.
  • Write high-quality instruction specifications that define what correct work looks like.
  • Produce golden solutions for life sciences problems.
  • Design challenging life sciences tasks and evaluation sets that test genuine domain depth.
  • Collaborate with research teams and adjacent-field specialists to keep standards consistent.
  • Translate tacit scientific judgment into explicit, structured criteria.

Required Qualifications

This role requires advanced life sciences training, substantial research experience, and the ability to communicate nuanced scientific judgments with precision.

  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, or a closely related life science.
  • At least four years of substantive post-graduate research experience.
  • Research experience at a recognized research institution, university, medical center, national laboratory, or industrial research organization.
  • Genuine specialization in at least one relevant life sciences area.
  • Clear progression to a senior level, such as Senior Scientist, Staff Scientist, Research Scientist, or Principal Investigator, with ownership of research direction.
  • Hands-on professional use of large language models.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Ability to provide precise, structured feedback.

Helpful Background

A strong publication record can be valuable for this work, particularly when it demonstrates direct ownership of rigorous scientific research.

  • Peer-reviewed publications.
  • First-author research in strong journals is especially helpful.

Schedule, Location, and Pay

This is a full-time W-2 role for an initial six-month engagement. The schedule is 40 hours per week, and the hybrid arrangement requires living in the Bay Area and working on-site with the project team multiple days per week when required.

  • $65-$105 per hour.
  • Paid weekly.
  • Bay Area, California location required.
  • Hybrid work arrangement.
  • 40 hours per week for the initial six-month engagement.
