The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking a Legal AI Training Expert to create, review, and improve high-quality legal tasks. You will analyze complex legal issues, evaluate AI-generated responses for accuracy, and produce gold-standard solutions that reflect real legal work.

This is a remote contractor position requiring at least 4 hours per day and up to 40 hours per week, including 4 hours of overlap with Pacific Time. The role is open worldwide to English-speaking legal professionals.

What You'll Do

You will combine legal analysis, clear writing, and quality judgment to produce reliable training data and evaluate the performance of other contributors and AI systems.

  • Produce high-difficulty expert tasks and gold-standard solutions based on contract interpretation, legal research, regulatory analysis, and dispute resolution.
  • Review and calibrate team members’ output to maintain consistency and quality.
  • Evaluate AI-generated responses against legal standards, identify errors or ambiguities, and provide corrected versions.
  • Escalate genuine edge cases and rubric ambiguities to the Functional SME Lead.
  • Collaborate with legal experts to calibrate quality and ensure consistency across tasks.

Required Qualifications

This position is intended for an experienced legal professional with substantial practice experience and the ability to explain complex legal reasoning in writing. The structured experience level is listed as entry level, but the role description requires approximately 5 to 15 years of legal practice experience at a senior associate, counsel, or equivalent level.

  • Approximately 5 to 15 years of legal practice experience, ideally at senior associate, counsel, or equivalent level in a law firm or corporate legal department.
  • Juris Doctor, active bar admission, or an equivalent legal qualification and professional license applicable to your region.
  • Advanced experience drafting, reviewing, negotiating, and revising commercial contracts, legal agreements, policies, and other legal documents.
  • Strong legal research and analytical skills, including the ability to assess complex matters, identify risks, and provide clear, practical advice.
  • Expert knowledge of interpreting laws, regulations, and regulatory guidance and translating them into actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent written communication skills and the ability to document legal reasoning clearly.
  • Comfort working in a remote, collaborative environment.

Prior experience in AI evaluation, data annotation, content review, quality assurance, or a related analytical role can help you contribute quickly, but it is preferred rather than required.
