About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. Creating an OpenTrain account is free and gives you access to projects where people teach AI by annotating data, reviewing outputs, and improving model behavior.

We connect skilled contributors with projects that need careful human review and annotation — work that directly shapes how today’s AI systems understand documents, language, and images.

About AI training and document annotation

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of building intelligent systems. For document projects, skilled annotators turn PDFs into structured, machine-readable examples by marking layout elements, verifying OCR text, and describing table structure.

This work is 100% remote, often flexible by design, and is a fast-growing way to work in tech — contributors help shape how models read and understand real-world documents.

The role — what you’ll do

We’re hiring native Japanese speakers based in Japan for two roles: Annotators and QA Reviewers. Both roles work remotely and focus on Japanese PDF documents such as technical presentations, government forms, and contracts.

  • Annotators: draw bounding boxes around text blocks, tables, figures, headers and captions.
  • Classify each element using predefined annotation categories and ensure correct hierarchical relationships and reading order.
  • Verify and correct OCR-generated Japanese text; create simple HTML-based descriptions for tables.
  • QA Reviewers: inspect completed annotations for accuracy, provide feedback, and approve or flag work.

Requirements

You must meet all core requirements to be considered for this project.

  • Native Japanese speaker with professional reading and writing ability.
  • Currently located in Japan and able to work from Japan.
  • Basic English proficiency (B1 or higher) for reading platform instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to follow detailed guidelines, and work independently.
  • Reliable internet connection and consistent availability.
  • Able to start within 3 business days of notification and complete an initial 2–3 hour pilot.

Preferred qualifications

These skills are not strictly required but will help you stand out and may lead to more ongoing work.

  • Experience with document annotation, data labeling, transcription, or structured QA work.
  • Familiarity with technical, financial, or legal documents.
  • Basic HTML knowledge for creating table descriptions.

Pay, schedule, and contract

This project is contractor work and paid hourly in USD. The project begins with a short pilot so reviewers can assess quality before production tasks are assigned.

  • Annotators: $18.00 USD per hour.
  • QA Reviewers: $20.00 USD per hour.
  • Initial pilot: 2–3 hours. Production: flexible hours with potential for ongoing assignments based on performance.

How to apply and next steps

Create a free OpenTrain account, complete your profile, and apply to this project. Be prepared to start the pilot within three business days if selected.

If accepted to the pilot you will receive detailed annotation guidelines and access to the labeling tool (web-based). QA reviewers will be given instructions for feedback and approval workflows.

  • Have a recent sample of your Japanese reading/writing experience ready (resume or short summary).
  • Ensure you can complete the initial 2–3 hour pilot and meet turnaround expectations during production.
