About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We hire and contract contributors directly for projects that shape how modern AI systems behave. Joining OpenTrain means working on cutting-edge annotation and QA work while building a portfolio of AI training experience.

About AI training and why it matters

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building intelligent systems. People prepare, review, and rate examples so models learn correct, safe, and culturally appropriate behavior. This work is remote-friendly, flexible, and accessible — a fast-growing way to work in tech and influence next-generation AI.

The role

We're hiring a Japanese Content QA Lead to evaluate AI-generated Japanese content and the QA work of trainers across Japanese projects. You will ensure outputs meet project rubrics and Japanese language standards, provide clear written feedback, help onboard and coach contributors, and maintain documentation and scalable QA processes.

  • Position type: Contractor, part-time (20+ hours/week).
  • Location: Remote within Japan only.
  • Pay: $55 USD per hour.

What you'll do day to day

You will review content and trainer QA for accuracy, fluency, and adherence to guidelines, and you will communicate quality expectations to contributors. Your work helps keep teams aligned and improves model outputs through better human feedback.

  • Evaluate Japanese AI-generated content and trainer QA against detailed rubrics for grammar, tone, cultural appropriateness, meaning preservation, instruction-following, and formatting.
  • Provide precise, actionable written feedback in English and/or Japanese to trainers and QAs.
  • Identify recurring quality gaps, escalate critical issues, and propose corrective actions.
  • Maintain and update documentation: style guides, FAQs, trackers, examples, honeypots, and quality notes.
  • Support onboarding and training calls; help activate inactive contributors and scale QA workflows.

Requirements

You must be able to read and write Japanese at a native or near-native level, and communicate clearly in English for coordination and feedback. Prior experience in Japanese writing, editing, translation, localization, content QA, or AI training-related review workflows is required.

  • Native or near-native Japanese reading and writing ability.
  • Strong understanding of Japanese grammar, kana/kanji usage, punctuation, keigo, tone, register, honorifics, and localization nuance.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated Japanese content against detailed rubrics and provide reproducible feedback.
  • Experience in Japanese writing, translation, localization, content QA, or AI training/LLM evaluation.
  • Comfortable communicating in English for team coordination and documentation.
  • Familiarity with Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers/dashboards, and project management workflows.

Who should apply

This role is a great fit for experienced Japanese editors, localization leads, translation reviewers, or anyone who has performed rubric-driven QA on language outputs. It suits people who enjoy mentoring others, improving documentation, and scaling remote QA processes.

  • You value clear, constructive feedback and can translate linguistic judgment into pragmatic guidance for contributors.
  • You prefer flexible, remote contract work and can commit to 20+ hours per week from within Japan.

How hiring and work logistics work

OpenTrain is the contracting organization for this role and will manage hiring, onboarding, and payments. Assignments are remote and managed through common collaboration tools (Discord, Sheets, Docs). You will be evaluated against project rubrics and supported with documentation and onboarding sessions.

  • Employment type: Contractor, part-time.
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours/week; schedule is typically flexible but must fit project needs.
  • Pay: $55 USD per hour, paid by OpenTrain.
