About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the centralized platform where people build careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect skilled freelancers with specialized projects, help contributors consolidate work across opportunities, and enable building a portable AI-training portfolio.

About AI training and legal annotation

AI training (data labeling/annotation) is the human work that teaches models how to reason and respond. For legal and IP systems, that means experienced professionals review, rate, and craft model outputs so AI gives accurate, defensible guidance.

This role sits at the intersection of IP law and AI quality: your legal expertise will shape how models spot issues, assess rights and risks, draft clauses, and explain legal concepts clearly to non-experts.

The role

OpenTrain is hiring an Intellectual Property AI Training Expert to review AI-generated IP and legal responses, produce expert content and model answers, and assess reasoning quality across a range of IP topics. Work is contract, remote, and suitable for senior IP practitioners who want to apply their skills to improving AI behavior.

  • Work type: hourly remote contractor, part-time (20+ hours/week).
  • Tasks focus on text data: evaluation ratings and text generation.
  • Rate: $50–$140 per hour (projects vary by complexity and experience).

What you'll do

Your day-to-day will combine careful legal review, plain-language explanation, and judgments about model quality. Expect to compare AI responses, write model answers, and create guidance that helps models reason more like a skilled IP lawyer.

  • Review AI-generated IP/legal responses for accuracy and defensible reasoning.
  • Create prompts, issue analyses, clause rewrites, checklists, and scenario walkthroughs.
  • Evaluate and rank model responses for correctness, clarity, completeness, and prompt adherence.
  • Fact-check IP concepts and citations when needed.
  • Test outputs for misleading certainty, confidentiality risks, and bias.
  • Validate reliability across trademark, copyright, patent basics, trade secrets, and licensing scenarios.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the core legal and experience requirements below. OpenTrain cannot alter or waive these professional qualifications.

  • JD or LLB with active bar membership or eligibility in at least one jurisdiction.
  • 5+ years of professional IP law experience in law firm, in-house, or government settings.
  • Strong working knowledge of copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, and licensing issues.
  • Experience with IP agreements such as assignments, NDAs, license agreements, work-for-hire, or open-source review.
  • Clear plain-language writing and ability to explain complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
  • Minimum English proficiency C1.
  • Prior AI data training, annotation, knowledge management, legal editorial QA, or policy drafting experience is preferred (but not mandatory).

Who should apply

This role is designed for senior IP practitioners who want to apply practical IP expertise to improving AI systems. It suits lawyers who enjoy writing clear guidance, assessing arguments, and translating legal reasoning into reproducible evaluation criteria.

  • Experienced IP lawyers seeking flexible, remote contract work across time zones.
  • Professionals interested in shaping how AI handles ownership, infringement, clearance, and licensing logic.
  • Those who want to build a visible AI-training portfolio while maintaining independent practice or other engagements.

Work logistics and how it works

OpenTrain hires contractors directly for expert review and annotation projects. You will be assigned tasks that match your expertise and availability, with opportunities across time zones. Projects vary in scope and may lead to recurring work for qualified experts.

Selected experts will perform text-based evaluation and generation tasks using OpenTrain tools and guidelines, submit rated responses and written model answers, and follow confidentiality and quality standards outlined in project materials.

  • Commitment: 20+ hours per week (part-time contractor).
  • Employment types: CONTRACTOR, PART_TIME.
  • Work locations: remote; Open to applicants based in Vietnam, Timor-Leste, Thailand, Singapore, Pakistan, Philippines, Nepal, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Indonesia, Bhutan, Bangladesh, India, Brazil, Germany, United States.
  • Label types: EVALUATION_RATING and TEXT_GENERATION on text data.
  • Pay: hourly, $50–$140 USD per hour (projects compensated per hour).
