The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking an intellectual property attorney or patent agent to create evaluation tasks for AI systems working across patent prosecution, licensing, portfolio strategy, and IP enforcement. You will translate the technical complexity, commercial stakes, and procedural requirements of IP matters into realistic scenarios, reference outputs, and evaluation rubrics.

Projects may focus on United States standards, international standards, or both. The role is classified as entry level in the provided job data, but the required qualifications call for at least five years of professional IP experience and direct ownership of significant matters.

What You'll Do

You will design document-based AI evaluation work that reflects the judgment, procedures, and practical tradeoffs found in professional intellectual property practice. Your deliverables should make it possible to assess whether an AI system can reason through complex IP matters rather than simply repeat legal terminology.

• Construct scenarios covering patent prosecution, portfolio strategy, IP litigation and enforcement, trademark and copyright practice, licensing, technology transfer, and freedom-to-operate analysis.
• Apply patentability analysis, claim construction, and freedom-to-operate review to relevant legal and technical situations.
• Produce reference patent applications, office action responses, licensing agreements, and litigation memoranda.
• Author rubrics that distinguish sound senior IP judgment from generic law school or bar examination recall.
• Use relevant patent search, IP docketing, portfolio management, and claim-charting tools where appropriate.

Required Qualifications

This project requires substantial professional intellectual property experience and the ability to create authoritative legal reference materials. Candidates should be comfortable applying applicable procedural systems and legal standards to realistic patent and IP scenarios.

• At least five years of professional experience as an IP attorney or patent agent at a major IP firm or corporate IP department.
• Direct responsibility for patent prosecution portfolios, licensing negotiations, or IP litigation matters.
• Practical command of patentability analysis, claim construction, and freedom-to-operate review.
• Practical understanding of USPTO, EPO, PCT, WIPO, or other applicable procedural and treaty systems.
• Ability to produce authoritative patent, licensing, or litigation reference documents and evaluation rubrics.
• A recognized credential such as a JD with bar admission and USPTO patent bar registration, European Patent Attorney qualification, or an equivalent credential is strongly preferred.
• A technical or STEM background and prior rubric or training authorship are valuable additions.
