OpenTrain is the centralized, open platform where people start and grow careers teaching AI. Contributors use OpenTrain to discover AI training projects, build a unified portfolio, and take on flexible, remote work that directly shapes how modern AI systems behave.
We hire and contract contributors directly for specialized AI training work. This role is a contract position with OpenTrain AI and fits into our mission of creating durable freelance careers in data labeling and AI training.
Why AI training work matters
AI training (data labeling / human feedback) is the human side of building intelligent systems: people provide examples, evaluate outputs, and surface bugs so models improve safely and usefully. These roles are often remote, flexible, and accessible to engineers and domain experts alike.
This role combines engineering with hands-on product evaluation: you’ll both build backend features and exercise alpha coding assistants to collect structured technical feedback and bug reports.
The role
You will work as a Go backend developer who also performs technical evaluations of early-stage AI coding tools. The position is part-time (less than 20 hours per week), contract-based, and fully remote. Work will include backend feature development, performance tuning, database migrations, and repeated testing bursts of AI coding models in a provided testing environment.
Expect to document incidents, reproduce bugs, capture traces and screenshots, and submit clear, structured feedback about model behavior, correctness, and developer experience after each testing burst.
Employment type: Contractor, part-time
Time commitment: Less than 20 hours/week
Work location: Remote / worldwide
Pay: Hourly, USD $30–$90 per hour
What you'll do
This is a hands-on engineering + evaluation role. You’ll split time between backend development tasks and concentrated product QA sessions where you probe AI coding behavior and usability.
Build and maintain REST and GraphQL endpoints in a modern Go stack
Validate incoming/outgoing data, implement robust error handling, and run database migrations
Improve performance and reliability through profiling and tuning
Conduct repeated testing bursts of alpha AI coding tools in the provided environment
Record bugs, incidents, and edge cases with detailed reports, stack traces, and annotated screenshots
Provide structured feedback and usability impressions after each test session
Requirements
You must meet the core technical and communication requirements listed below. We will rely on your ability to reproduce issues, write clear technical findings, and protect any confidential materials during reporting.
5+ years professional Go development experience
Strong command of Go, REST APIs, GraphQL, and backend best practices
Proven debugging, data validation, and error-handling skills
Experience with AI-powered coding tools or code-completion assistants (experience with modern tools preferred)
Clear written and verbal communication for technical findings
Ability to document findings clearly while protecting confidential information
Public open-source contributions preferred
Prior technical product evaluation or developer-tool QA experience preferred
Who should apply
Apply if you are a seasoned Go backend engineer who enjoys investigating edge cases, reproducing bugs, and giving structured, actionable feedback. This role is a great fit for developers who want flexible, part-time work that mixes engineering and hands-on model/product evaluation.
Ideal for engineers seeking remote, flexible, part-time contract work
Good fit if you like deep debugging, reproducibility, and clear technical writing

Compensation, data work, and next steps
This role pays hourly (USD) with a range of $30–$90/hr and is paid per agreed hours. The work focuses on computer code: you will perform programming-focused annotation and evaluation (code labeling, correctness judgments, and usability ratings).
If this matches your experience and availability, prepare examples of relevant Go work (open-source links, portfolio, or short descriptions of systems you’ve built) and be ready to describe prior QA or evaluation tasks you’ve performed.
