The GitHub Contributor Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking an expert GitHub Contributor for a remote contractor engagement. You will use strong software engineering skills to create and review technical content, troubleshoot complex defects, implement features, and improve codebases used in AI training workflows.

Applicants must have clear open-source contributions and profiles they can showcase, such as GitHub or GitLab. The role is expected to last six months or longer, with a typical role description of approximately 15 hours per week. Additional project requirements specify a minimum weekly commitment of 20 hours, so availability should be confirmed during the hiring process.

What You’ll Do

Your work will focus on computer programming labeling, text generation, and evaluation rating tasks. You will document your reasoning clearly so that technical decisions and solutions can support high-quality AI training data.

  • Contribute expert-level code samples and development insights in Python 3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript
  • Analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex software defects and performance bottlenecks
  • Implement robust features with attention to scalability, maintainability, and software engineering best practices
  • Refactor and optimize legacy code to improve clarity, efficiency, and long-term reliability
  • Document technical reasoning, solution approaches, and code decisions
  • Review and validate peer-contributed code and technical submissions for accuracy and clarity

Requirements and Preferred Qualifications

This opportunity is intended for experienced software engineers and developers with a visible record of open-source contribution. Previous AI experience is not required, but you should be interested in or curious about AI and its technical challenges.

  • Hands-on expertise in at least one of Python 3, Java, Rust, Go, C++, or TypeScript
  • Strong understanding of algorithms, data structures, and software engineering principles
  • Proven ability to debug complex systems, resolve bugs, and deliver effective optimizations
  • Experience refactoring large codebases and modernizing legacy systems
  • Track record of delivering high-impact features from conception through delivery in cross-functional projects
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • Experience with computer code programming labeling workflows
  • Experience with text generation and evaluation rating tasks
  • Software engineering and AI training data subject matter expertise
  • Clear GitHub, GitLab, or comparable open-source profile
  • Fluent English proficiency and comfort working in English

Compensation and Availability

The structured compensation information lists a USD rate of $50 to $100 per hour, with a $50 hourly minimum.
