About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect contributors with real, remote contracting work that helps shape how modern AI systems behave, and creating an OpenTrain account is free.

About AI training work

AI training (sometimes called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of teaching models to understand language and sound. Contributors record and review audio, annotate phonetic detail, and rate model outputs so speech systems learn correct pronunciation and comprehension.

  • Work is remote, flexible, and often part-time—suitable alongside other commitments.
  • No single career path is required; many projects welcome entry-level contributors with the right language skills.

The role

OpenTrain is hiring contractors to record and review German speech data for AI model development. This part-time role expects at least 20 hours per week and focuses on clear audio recording, precise phonetic annotation, and evaluation of AI-generated speech and text outputs.

  • Data type: Audio (speech).
  • Labeling tasks: Transcription, data collection, and evaluation/rating.
  • Employment: Contractor, part-time; worldwide applicants accepted.
  • Language: Native-level German (de).
  • Experience level: Entry level (relevant experience valuable but not always required).

What you'll do

  • Record clear German audio samples following provided prompts and recording guidelines.
  • Annotate speech with phonetic and linguistic detail to capture pronunciation and regional variations.
  • Review AI-generated speech/text for pronunciation accuracy, naturalness, and language understanding, and provide structured feedback.
  • Support and follow speech data collection workflows to ensure consistent, high-quality contributions.
  • Collaborate remotely with the OpenTrain project team to maintain annotation standards and meet deadlines.

Requirements

  • Native fluency in German with familiarity across regional accents and nuances.
  • Knowledge of German phonetics and pronunciation and ability to apply that knowledge in annotations.
  • Experience recording audio samples or working with speech data (recording, podcasting, voice work, or prior annotation experience is valuable).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for clear, remote collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and maintain attention to detail.

Helpful background and who should apply

You should apply if you speak German natively and enjoy careful listening, recording, and describing pronunciation. Candidates with linguistics, speech-language, audio engineering, voice acting, podcasting, or communication experience will be comfortable in this role but these are not strict prerequisites.

  • Good fit for entry-level contributors who have language expertise and attention to detail.
  • Valuable experience: prior AI training projects or familiarity with annotation tools.

How it works & compensation

OpenTrain hires contractors for this role. The position is paid hourly and requires at least 20 hours per week. Applicants worldwide may apply; exact scheduling and task cadence depend on project needs.

  • Pay: $30–$65 per hour (paid per hour; specific rate varies by task and experience).
  • Type: Contractor, part-time. Expected time commitment: 20+ hours/week.
  • To apply: create a free OpenTrain account and submit your profile and language/experience details.
