The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting a German Audio Transcriptionist to create precise German-language transcripts that help AI systems understand spoken language across German-speaking communities. You will work with real-world recordings that may include crosstalk, filled pauses, heavy accents, background noise, and multiple simultaneous speakers.

The role is remote and flexible, with particular relevance for contributors based in Zurich who speak Swiss German or standard Hochdeutsch. Previous AI experience is not required.

• Work remotely as a contractor and part-time contributor
• Commit to 20+ hours per week
• Earn $10-$35 per hour
• Work with German-language audio, including Swiss German and standard Hochdeutsch

What You’ll Do

You will listen closely to German-language recordings and produce accurate, verbatim transcripts. Success requires careful attention to difficult audio, consistent use of transcription conventions, and the ability to work independently and asynchronously across substantial volumes of material.

• Transcribe German audio accurately and verbatim
• Handle crosstalk, filled pauses, accents, background noise, and multiple speakers
• Identify and distinguish speakers
• Apply conventions for non-verbal sounds and incomplete utterances
• Follow detailed transcription, formatting, and style guidelines
• Maintain accuracy and consistency across substantial audio volumes

Requirements

Native or near-native German fluency is required, including the ability to work with Swiss German or standard Hochdeutsch. You should have strong written German spelling, punctuation, and grammar, along with exceptional listening skills for challenging recordings.

A careful, methodical approach is important. You must be reliable, self-directed, comfortable with web-based tools, and able to apply detailed requirements consistently.

Helpful Background

Experience in professional transcription, court reporting, stenography, subtitling, closed captioning, media post-production, linguistics, annotation workflows, transcription software, or audio editing tools is useful but not required.

Awareness of Swiss German dialect features and their relationship to standard written German is also relevant. Entry-level candidates are welcome if they meet the language and accuracy requirements.
