About OpenTrain

OpenTrain AI is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help contributors discover specialized projects, build a professional profile, and grow durable careers in a rapidly expanding field where human expertise shapes the next generation of AI.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Experts write challenging examples, review model responses, identify errors, and provide structured feedback that helps AI systems reason more accurately. This remote, flexible work lets experienced professionals apply their knowledge to cutting-edge technology.

The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking an Engineering AI Technical Problem Author to create and assess challenging technical problems used to improve AI systems in engineering. You will use practical engineering judgment to evaluate model reasoning and improve the quality, accuracy, and relevance of technical outputs.

Relevant specialties may include aerodynamics, materials science, CAD and mechanical design, circuit design, or mechanical engineering. The role is listed as entry level in the project details, but it requires substantial professional expertise, including at least five years of hands-on experience in a relevant specialty.

  • Work remotely and independently as a contractor on a part-time basis.
  • Contribute 20 or more hours per week.
  • Use professional English in written and verbal communication.
  • Compensation is output-based for tasks that meet project specifications.
  • The listed compensation range is $80-$110 USD per hour.

What You'll Do

You will create technically rigorous content and assess whether AI-generated responses demonstrate sound engineering reasoning. Your work will support ongoing refinement of technical problems and model outputs.

  • Author advanced technical problems based on real-world design, analysis, failure scenarios, and theoretical engineering contexts.
  • Review AI-generated technical responses for correctness, accuracy, clarity, and engineering relevance.
  • Troubleshoot complex domain-specific issues and identify ambiguities in statements, assumptions, and conditions.
  • Propose clarifications and provide structured feedback to improve model learning and reasoning.
  • Explain technical decisions clearly in written and verbal formats.
  • Document insights and recommendations for refining technical problems and model outputs.
  • Work independently while collaborating remotely with a network of technical experts.

Requirements

This position calls for deep expertise in an engineering specialty and the ability to apply professional judgment to both practical and theoretical technical problems. Some specialties may require eight or more years of experience.

  • At least five years of hands-on experience in a relevant engineering specialty, such as mechanical design, aerodynamic analysis, materials selection, or circuit and system development.
  • An advanced degree in a relevant engineering discipline or substantial industry experience.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills in professional English.
  • Ability to author rigorous technical problems across practical, theoretical, and failure-scenario contexts.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated responses for correctness, ambiguity, and engineering relevance.
  • Strong technical writing and the ability to provide clear, structured feedback.
  • Familiarity with relevant tools, which may include AutoCAD, CAD suites, CFD or FEA software, EDA tools, or laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to deliver clear, rigorous technical work independently in a remote setting.

Helpful Background

Experience authoring difficult technical problems for olympiad committees, licensure examinations, academic qualifying examinations, standards committees, or technical competitions is especially relevant. Evidence of technical rigor may also include publications, patents, industry awards, competition results, or committee service.

Schedule And Compensation

The project requires 20 or more hours per week, with the number of tasks and time needed varying according to project needs. Compensation is output-based, with payment for completed tasks that meet project specifications. The listed pay range is $80-$110 USD per hour.
