About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help freelancers consolidate proof of work, build a unified portfolio, and grow sustainable freelance careers teaching AI.

Working with OpenTrain means joining a fast-growing industry where contributors directly shape how state-of-the-art AI systems behave, while keeping a single profile that reflects your expertise across projects.

About AI Training Work

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of building intelligent systems: people prepare, review, and refine examples that modern models learn from. This role focuses on chemistry content used to train and evaluate language models and educational tools.

This is remote, flexible work that often fits around other commitments; many roles require only domain knowledge and strong communication rather than prior annotation experience.

The Role

You will work as a Chemistry Expert Reviewer designing, reviewing, and refining chemistry content, questions, and real-world scenarios used for AI training and evaluation. Your feedback and annotations will help improve model accuracy, clarity, and pedagogical effectiveness.

This is a part-time contractor role with a minimum expectation of 20+ hours per week, paid hourly. Tasks are document-focused and involve evaluation, text generation guidance, and entity annotation.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours/week
  • Data type: Document (text-focused tasks)
  • Labeling work: Text generation prompts/responses, evaluation rating, and named-entity / classification tasks

What You'll Do

Apply your chemistry expertise and teaching experience to create and improve chemistry materials used for model training and learner-facing exercises. Provide clear, actionable written and verbal feedback that improves content quality and model outputs.

  • Review chemistry content, questions, and real-world scenarios for accuracy, relevance, and clarity
  • Curate and annotate chemistry-related texts and problems for training datasets
  • Provide written and verbal feedback to help improve model performance and learning materials
  • Use pedagogical experience to make explanations and problems clearer and more accessible
  • Identify trends or gaps in chemical education that can inform dataset and model improvements

Requirements

We will not consider qualifications beyond those listed below; bring clear examples from your teaching or research when you apply.

  • PhD in Chemistry or near completion of a doctoral degree (ABD candidates considered)
  • Experience teaching chemistry at the undergraduate or graduate level
  • Background in chemical research and scholarly publication
  • Familiarity with chemistry pedagogy and curriculum design
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with attention to detail
  • Comfort working independently in a remote contractor setting

Who Should Apply

This role is ideal for chemistry PhDs or doctoral candidates with classroom and research experience who want to apply their expertise to improve AI systems and educational content. If you enjoy explaining complex ideas clearly and want flexible remote work at a competitive hourly rate, apply.

Compensation, Languages & How It Works

Pay is hourly: $70–$90 USD per hour. The contract is part-time and remote; OpenTrain will provide project instructions and annotation guidelines. You will perform document-based review and annotation tasks using the platform's workflows.

Required language: English. This role is open worldwide to qualified candidates. Expect to deliver high-quality review and annotations on schedule and to communicate findings clearly in writing and when requested verbally.
