About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help subject-matter experts find and manage AI training projects, consolidate proof-of-work, and grow a durable freelance portfolio without rebuilding credentials on each platform.

Joining OpenTrain means contributing directly to how AI systems learn: your domain expertise becomes part of training data, benchmarks, and quality standards that shape future models.

About AI training work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building intelligent systems: people create, review, and rate examples that teach models how to answer, reason, and explain. This work is remote, flexible, and accessible to experts and non-experts alike.

As a subject-matter contributor you will produce authoritative content and benchmarks that guide model outputs in chemistry-focused tasks, directly influencing how models handle advanced scientific queries.

The role

We are hiring a Chemistry Expert (PhD) to create and validate advanced chemistry responses used as gold-standard examples and training material. You will provide accurate answers, detailed explanations, and quality reviews to ensure scientific correctness and clarity.

This is a contract, part-time role with a baseline expectation of 20+ hours per week and a compensation range of $80–$90 USD per hour.

What you’ll do

You will produce, review, and document high-quality chemistry content for AI training projects and collaborate with annotation leads to refine expectations and quality metrics.

  • Write authoritative answers to advanced chemistry questions with clear step-by-step explanations and justifications.
  • Review chemistry data, proposed solutions, and model outputs for correctness, completeness, and pedagogical clarity.
  • Create and document golden examples and benchmark responses that serve as quality standards for annotators and models.
  • Help define response requirements, evaluation rubrics, and domain-specific quality checks.
  • Participate in occasional remote discussions or workshops to align on domain expectations and project goals.

Requirements

Candidates must meet all core requirements listed below; we will verify credentials and evaluate sample work during onboarding.

  • PhD in Chemistry or a closely related discipline.
  • Proven ability to write clear, precise explanations of advanced chemistry concepts.
  • Experience producing or reviewing educational, research, or technical chemistry content.
  • Familiarity with multiple chemistry subfields (organic, inorganic, physical, analytical, materials, etc.).
  • Strong attention to scientific accuracy, completeness, and detail.
  • Experience collaborating remotely or across cross-functional teams.

Helpful background (not required)

Prior exposure to AI, data annotation, or digital content projects is a plus but not required. Comfortable formatting explanations for learners and annotators will help you succeed.

Logistics, tools, and scope

This role is contract, part-time, and remote. Open to applicants worldwide who can work in English. Typical tasks are text-based: question answering, text generation, and evaluation/rating.

Compensation: paid hourly at $80–$90 USD per hour. Time expectation: 20+ hours per week. Employment types: contractor, part-time.

  • Data types: text; label/annotation types include question answering, text generation, and evaluation/rating.
  • Language: English required; worldwide applicants welcome.
  • OpenTrain coordinates onboarding, feedback, and quality processes—project-specific tooling will be provided during onboarding.

Who should apply and how to proceed

Apply if you hold a PhD in Chemistry, enjoy explaining complex topics in clear written form, and want to influence how AI systems handle scientific content. This role is well suited to researchers, educators, and experienced scientific communicators seeking flexible, impactful remote work.

If this matches your background, create an OpenTrain profile, submit your credentials, and be prepared to provide sample explanations or a short assessment as part of onboarding.
