The Role
OpenTrain AI is seeking a Chemistry and Materials Science AI Workflow Reviewer to develop high-quality training data from authentic scientific workflows. You will explain how AI coding agents support chemistry and materials science work, assess the quality and limitations of their output, and translate complex technical experiences into useful examples for improving AI systems.
This is a remote, part-time contractor opportunity requiring 20+ hours per week. Compensation is $80–$100 USD per hour.

What You'll Do
You will produce detailed, data-rich insights grounded in real chemistry or materials science practice. Your work will combine scientific expertise, technical evaluation, clear documentation, and verbal feedback.
Document large codebase navigation, difficult debugging, feature development, and architectural changes
Describe ambiguous scientific problems, including methods, decisions, technical challenges, and outcomes
Evaluate where AI coding agents are effective and where their output is limited
Provide practical recommendations for training AI systems in STEM contexts
Create datasets, training materials, and case studies reflecting real chemistry and materials science workflows
Share expertise through clear written documentation and verbal feedback sessions
Direct, review, test, and validate AI-assisted work across multistep technical workflows
Required Qualifications
An advanced degree or equivalent professional experience is required in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a closely related STEM discipline. This opportunity is categorized as entry level within AI training, but it requires substantial subject-matter expertise and hands-on experience with scientific AI coding workflows.

Hands-on experience using Codex, Claude Science, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, or comparable AI coding agents in scientific work
Experience navigating complex codebases, debugging difficult issues, developing features, or making architectural changes
Ability to evaluate, test, and validate AI-generated technical work
Ability to explain process decisions across multistep technical workflows
Strong technical writing, verbal communication, analytical reasoning, and critical-thinking skills
Helpful Background
Experience evaluating or introducing AI-powered workflows in scientific research or industrial environments can help you produce stronger training examples. Familiarity with computational chemistry, materials modeling, laboratory automation, or other complex scientific codebases is also valuable.
Experience solving ambiguous technical problems, developing end-to-end features, and communicating how AI tools affected productivity can further support success in this role.
