About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Specialists create examples, write challenging prompts, and evaluate model responses so AI systems can reason more accurately and reliably. This role brings computational fluid dynamics expertise into that process through carefully designed engineering tasks and objective evaluation.
- Help train and evaluate AI models on engineering reasoning
- Turn practical technical knowledge into clear, testable examples
- Contribute to a fast-growing field at the intersection of engineering and AI
The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a CFD Engineer, AI Task Designer to create compact engineering challenges focused on computational fluid dynamics and aerodynamics reasoning. You will translate expertise in boundary conditions, mesh quality, flow regimes, simulation setup, and heat transfer into self-contained tasks with deterministic scoring and trusted reference solutions.
This freelance, hourly role is performed remotely and asynchronously. The expected commitment is 20 or more hours per week within a flexible range of 10 to 40 hours, and the rate is $80-$110 per hour. The opportunity may support ongoing work as additional projects become available.
- Location: United States
- Language: English
- Employment type: Contractor and part-time
- Work schedule: Flexible and asynchronous
- Rate: $80-$110 per hour
What You'll Do
You will combine CFD practice, technical writing, and objective evaluation to produce engineering challenges that are accurate, solvable, and suitable for automated assessment.
- Design CFD and aerodynamics problems that test engineering reasoning
- Write unambiguous task statements covering boundary conditions, mesh quality, flow regimes, and simulation setup
- Develop deterministic checkers that evaluate model answers automatically
- Produce verified reference solutions that demonstrate solvability and correct scoring
- Review and refine tasks for physical accuracy, clarity, and appropriate difficulty
- Apply OpenFOAM experience while working independently on an asynchronous schedule
Required Qualifications
This opportunity requires practical CFD experience and the ability to communicate complex physical reasoning precisely. A bachelor's degree or higher in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline is preferred.
- Hands-on experience with OpenFOAM simulations
- Strong knowledge of fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, and heat transfer fundamentals
- Practical experience with mesh generation, turbulence modeling, boundary-condition specification, and post-processing
- Ability to formulate precise, self-contained, objectively verifiable engineering problems
- Strong written communication and the ability to explain complex physics concisely
Helpful Background
Additional experience can help you contribute across a broader range of task designs and evaluation methods, although the core requirements center on OpenFOAM and CFD fundamentals.
- Experience with multiple CFD solvers or multiphysics platforms
- Scripting experience with Python, Bash, or MATLAB
- Background in design optimization, flow control, adjoint methods, or graduate-level computational research
- Experience writing technical assessments, exam problems, or engineering challenges
