About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help freelancers discover specialized projects, consolidate work, and grow a unified portfolio that showcases their AI-training skills.

OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role. We support remote contributors who want flexible, part-time contracts in a fast-growing technical field.

About AI training and why it matters

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human work that teaches models how to understand engineering designs, images, audio, and text. Contributors directly shape how AI systems behave by preparing precise, high-quality examples.

This role focuses on CAD data generation and validation—work that produces the accurate parametric models and metadata AI needs to learn about mechanical parts, assemblies, tolerances, and manufacturing intent.

The role

You will create, edit, and validate precise parametric CAD models using FreeCAD to produce datasets for AI training. Deliverables include reusable mechanical parts and assemblies, GD&T-applied geometry, and clear engineering documentation.

Expect to iterate on models based on feedback, resolve CAD discrepancies, and use Python scripting where it speeds up modelling or parametrization.

What you'll do

  • Produce precise parametric CAD models and assemblies using FreeCAD.
  • Build libraries of reusable mechanical parts, features, and assemblies for dataset creation.
  • Apply GD&T and engineering best practices to meet real-world design standards.
  • Review CAD data, resolve geometry discrepancies, and maintain engineering documentation.
  • Incorporate feedback and produce revised deliverables on schedule.
  • Use Python scripting to automate repetitive modeling tasks and enhance parametrization (when helpful).

Requirements

This is an intermediate-level contractor role requiring strong parametric CAD and mechanical design experience, plus the ability to validate geometry against GD&T standards and manufacturing constraints.

  • Strong FreeCAD or equivalent parametric CAD modeling experience.
  • Experience building reusable, fully parametric mechanical models and assemblies.
  • Proven ability to validate CAD geometry and apply GD&T principles.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes and engineering documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail and precision in technical deliverables.
  • Python scripting experience for CAD automation or parametrization is a plus.
  • English language fluency required.

Who should apply

Mechanical designers, CAD modelers, manufacturing engineers, or industrial engineering specialists who enjoy precise modeling work and producing reusable, documented CAD assets should apply.

This role fits people who want flexible, remote contract work (20+ hours/week) contributing directly to how AI systems learn about engineered products.

How the role works

Engagement: Contractor, part-time (20+ hours/week), remote and worldwide. Compensation is hourly, USD $40–$100/hr, paid per agreement through OpenTrain AI.

Deliverables: Parametric FreeCAD models, assemblies, GD&T-applied geometry, and accompanying documentation; occasional Python scripts to automate workflows.

Feedback and iteration: Deliverables will be reviewed and refined based on project feedback. OpenTrain assigns and manages the contract and clarifies requirements during onboarding.
