About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Engineers, reviewers, and other specialists create examples, evaluate model behavior, and provide feedback that helps AI systems solve real problems more accurately.
In this project, your backend expertise will contribute directly to software-focused training data. You will create coding challenges and reliable reference solutions that test whether an AI model can fix code, build APIs, and improve data handling and performance.
Work on practical tasks connected to AI model development
Use your technical judgment to evaluate code and model-solving ability
Contribute to a fast-growing field shaping how AI systems work
The Role
As a Backend Engineer, you will create reinforcement learning environments that test AI models on backend software problems. Each environment should be reproducible and paired with a golden reference solution so model performance can be assessed consistently.
This is an expert-level contractor role for a backend developer comfortable solving problems across unfamiliar codebases. Previous AI experience is not required, but curiosity about AI and its technical challenges is encouraged.
Employment type: Contractor
Work arrangement: Remote and worldwide
Primary language: English
Project duration: Expected 3 to 6 months
Pay: $60 to $120 USD per hour
What You'll Do
You will combine hands-on backend development with careful technical documentation and evaluation. Your work will support the quality, reproducibility, and usefulness of computer code programming data used in AI training workflows.
Create reinforcement learning environments for backend software problems.
Develop reproducible environments and golden reference solutions.
Provide clear code samples, debugging approaches, and development insights in Python 3, Java, Go, Rust, C++, or TypeScript.
Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve backend bugs, data handling issues, and performance bottlenecks.
Build small to medium features, including APIs and database logic, using good coding practices.
Improve backend code and database queries for clarity, efficiency, and reliability.
Document your reasoning, approach, and code decisions to support AI training data quality.
Review peer-contributed code and technical submissions for correctness and clarity.
Requirements and Preferred Qualifications
The role requires fluent English communication and the ability to explain technical decisions clearly. Experience with computer code programming labeling workflows is also preferred.
At least 1 year of hands-on experience in Python 3, Java, Go, Rust, C++, or TypeScript.
Solid understanding of API design, SQL or NoSQL databases, and core data structures.
Ability to debug backend issues, identify root causes, and implement clean fixes.
Comfort working across different codebases and learning unfamiliar systems.
Strong documentation and communication skills.
Experience with computer code programming labeling workflows.
Fluent English proficiency.
Interest in or curiosity about AI and its technical challenges; previous AI experience is not required.
Who Should Apply
This opportunity is well suited to backend engineers who enjoy debugging, designing practical software solutions, and explaining how they reached a result. It may also appeal to developers who want to apply their existing programming experience to AI training without needing previous AI project experience.
Backend developers with experience in at least one listed programming language
Engineers who can reason about APIs, databases, data structures, and performance
Technical contributors who value precise documentation and peer review
Developers interested in helping AI systems become better at solving software problems
