The Role
OpenTrain AI is hiring an Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) Expert to support a frontier AI research lab developing models for semiconductors and the physical sciences. You will apply deep knowledge of ALD, thin-film deposition, precursor chemistry, and semiconductor processing to generate, organize, and evaluate scientific training data.
This is a long-term, ongoing contractor engagement for a US-based remote contributor. The listed rate is $84 per hour.

What You'll Do
You will combine hands-on ALD experience with strong technical communication to assess whether AI-generated scientific content is accurate, useful, and logically sound. Work will involve both generating domain-specific material and evaluating model outputs against defined scientific criteria.
Contribute expertise in ALD process development, precursor chemistry, and thin-film characterization.
Review AI-generated scientific reasoning and identify technical errors or weaknesses.
Design and solve challenging problems involving ALD and semiconductor processing.
Rate and rank model outputs using defined scientific criteria.
Explain evaluations with clear, structured written reasoning.
Organize process parameters, recipes, and characterization results into model-ready data.
Deliver reliable, high-quality work within defined timelines.
Required Qualifications
This role requires substantial practical and academic knowledge of ALD and semiconductor processes. The source requirements call for 5+ years of hands-on ALD process development or troubleshooting experience, along with an advanced degree or equivalent hands-on experience in a relevant scientific or engineering field.
5+ years of hands-on experience in ALD process development or troubleshooting.
Deep knowledge of thin-film deposition for semiconductor or advanced-packaging applications.
Strong understanding of precursor chemistry and surface reaction mechanisms.
Experience with XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, or ellipsometry.
PhD or MS in materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering, or physics, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Proven ability to review and critique AI-generated scientific reasoning in semiconductor processing.
Strong written English and the ability to explain technical reasoning precisely.
English language proficiency.
Helpful Background
