The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a 911 Dispatcher AI Evaluation Specialist to improve AI systems used in emergency response and real-time communications. You will apply practical dispatch judgment to simulated or real-world scenarios, assess how incidents are prioritized and routed, and help ensure that model outputs reflect clear, accurate, and professionally documented emergency communications.

This is a remote, project-based contractor engagement requiring less than 20 hours per week. Compensation is listed at $30–$65 per hour, depending on the assignment.

What You'll Do

You will evaluate emergency communications scenarios and provide structured feedback that supports AI model development. The work requires careful judgment, concise communication, and close attention to dispatch procedures and documentation quality.

• Prioritize and triage incoming requests using dispatch judgment in high-pressure, time-sensitive situations.
• Monitor radio, phone, and digital communication channels while managing multiple information streams.
• Apply APCO or NENA protocols to assess, document, and route incidents according to established procedures.
• Provide concise written and verbal responses for emergency scenarios.
• Explain decisions involving escalation or response handling.
• Give detailed feedback on how an incident was handled and where an AI response could improve.
• Develop typical and edge-case dispatch scenarios with recommended response protocols.
• Review and annotate transcripts or incident logs for fidelity, clarity, and training-data quality.

Requirements

This role is designed for an experienced emergency communications professional. Prior AI training experience is not required; the position values practical, hands-on expertise in dispatch and emergency response communications.

• At least three years of active experience as a police dispatcher, coordinator, or equivalent emergency communications professional.
• Ability to prioritize and triage incidents accurately under high pressure.
• Demonstrated ability to multitask and make rapid decisions under stress.
• Practical knowledge of APCO or NENA protocols and emergency call-routing procedures.
• Familiarity with dispatch protocols, CAD systems, and modern emergency communications technology.
• Experience managing radio, phone, and digital communication channels alongside CAD systems.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with careful attention to accuracy and professionalism.
• Experience documenting incident decisions, escalation paths, procedures, or operational guidance for training or quality assurance.

Preferred Background

APCO or NENA certification is strongly preferred. Experience communicating operational guidance for training or quality assurance is also valuable for reviewing model behavior and creating realistic dispatch examples.
