OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help contributors discover projects, consolidate proof of work into a single profile, and grow long-term freelance careers in the human side of AI.
OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role. We focus on reliable, repeatable projects that let contributors show credible experience and build a durable portfolio in AI training.
Why AI Training Work Matters
AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human work that teaches models how to behave. Contributors prepare and verify training examples—across text, speech, images, and code—that modern AI systems learn from.
This type of work is accessible, often flexible and remote, and a practical way to get hands-on experience shaping real AI systems. Many projects require no prior labeling experience; attention to detail and reliability matter most.
The Role
As an Ubuntu/Linux AI Data Trainer you will complete structured, text-focused data training tasks on a personal Ubuntu/Linux computer. The role is detail-heavy and independent: you will install required applications, follow written guides, record your actions, check for errors, and report unclear instructions or technical issues.
Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
Time commitment: Less than 20 hours per week
Payment: Hourly, $10–$20 USD per hour
What You'll Do
This project focuses on collecting and preparing text-based training data. Tasks are structured and repeatable; you will be given step-by-step written instructions and asked to document exactly what you do.
Install required applications and tools on your Ubuntu/Linux computer
Follow detailed written instructions and execute tasks carefully
Record your actions while completing tasks (logs, timestamps, or required notes)
Check your work for mistakes before submission and correct obvious errors
Identify and report inconsistencies, unclear instructions, or technical issues
Communicate clearly with project support when you need help
Requirements
You must have a personal computer running Ubuntu/Linux and be comfortable using it as your daily work environment. The role requires independent technical setup and careful, consistent execution of written procedures.
Regular use of Ubuntu/Linux and experience installing applications or tools
Ability to follow technical setup instructions independently
Basic computer literacy and confidence with browser-based tools
Strong attention to detail and patience with repetitive work
Reliability, responsiveness, and ability to meet deadlines
English language proficiency (work is conducted in English)
Who Should Apply
This role fits entry-level contributors who are comfortable on Ubuntu/Linux and enjoy methodical, detail-oriented work. Prior experience in AI data training, annotation, QA, software testing, or research is helpful but not required.
Good fit for freelancers, students, or professionals seeking flexible, part-time remote work
Ideal for people who prefer independent tasks with clear written instructions
Not suitable for applicants without access to an Ubuntu/Linux machine
Compensation, Eligibility, and How To Apply
Compensation is paid hourly at rates between $10 and $20 USD per hour, depending on performance and task complexity. The project is part-time and billed per hour.
This opportunity is open to contributors in specific countries listed in the project posting (not fully worldwide). If your country is eligible and you meet the technical requirements, create or update your OpenTrain profile and apply to join the project.
Once approved you'll receive written task instructions, setup steps for Ubuntu/Linux, and channels for support. Follow instructions carefully, document your work, and submit according to the project's deadlines.
