About AI training and this work

AI training (data labeling/annotation) is how people teach models to behave: reviewers prepare and evaluate examples such as code, SQL, text, images, and audio so models learn from accurate, high-quality data.

This role focuses on SQL and database content — you will directly influence how models generate queries, reason about schemas, and recommend analytics approaches by enforcing correctness, safety, and rubric-aligned quality.

The role

OpenTrain is hiring a SQL Quality Assurance Lead to review AI-generated SQL, schema reasoning, and data-modeling content and to provide clear written feedback that keeps outputs accurate, executable, and aligned with rubrics.

You will also help maintain QA consistency across trainers and reviewers by owning documentation, style guides, trackers, and onboarding materials, and by surfacing recurring issues for improvement.

What you'll do day-to-day

You will evaluate SQL and database content against technical and rubric standards, communicate issues clearly to contributors, and support reviewer activation and onboarding.

  • Review SQL queries, database explanations, schema reasoning, analytics workflows, and optimization recommendations.
  • Evaluate outputs for correctness, efficiency, readability, formatting, security awareness, and instruction-following.
  • Spot recurring quality gaps and communicate workflow updates to trainers and QAs.
  • Maintain documentation, FAQs, trackers, examples, honeypots, and onboarding materials.
  • Support contributor activation, follow-ups, and onboarding calls for SQL work.

Requirements

You must be able to assess SQL for syntax, logic, performance, and security issues, and to apply rubric-based evaluations while writing clear, actionable feedback.

  • 3+ years of SQL experience in analytics, database engineering, reporting, QA, teaching, or technical review.
  • Strong understanding of joins, aggregations, subqueries, CTEs, window functions, indexes, transactions, and normalization.
  • Ability to evaluate SQL against rubrics and identify syntax, logic, performance, and security issues.
  • Familiarity with SQL dialects such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, SQLite, BigQuery, Snowflake, or Redshift.
  • Strong English communication skills and experience coordinating with remote reviewers, analysts, engineers, or QAs.

Helpful background and tools

Experience leading remote teams or supporting documentation-heavy QA workflows will help you hit the ground running. Familiarity with AI training or rubric-based technical review is a plus but not required beyond the stated skills.

  • Experience with AI training, data annotation, LLM evaluation, SQL QA, code review, or rubric-based technical review is helpful.
  • Comfort using Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, GitHub, and project management systems.

Pay, hours, location, and engagement

This is a remote contractor role for candidates located in the United States. The role expects 20+ hours per week and is classified as part-time contract work.

Hourly pay is up to $70/hour (PAY_PER_HOUR, USD). OpenTrain is the hiring and contracting organization for this position.

  • Location: United States (remote)
  • Time: 20+ hours/week
  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Pay: Up to $70/hour

How the process works
