OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help people discover projects, build a professional profile, and grow their careers teaching and evaluating AI systems.
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Engineers, writers, analysts, and other specialists create examples, evaluate model outputs, and define what high-quality performance looks like so AI systems can become more capable and reliable.
OpenTrain AI is recruiting a Software Engineering Task Author to design authentic engineering challenges that train and evaluate advanced AI agents on real enterprise software work. This hands-on contract role involves authoring realistic prompts, building plausible engineering environments, solving each task yourself, and validating precise scoring criteria.
The role is fully remote and flexible, with a task-based commitment of 20 or more hours per week. It is open to contractors in the United States who work fluently in English.
You will create engineering tasks that place an AI agent in realistic software development and production scenarios. Each task must have a clear objective, a credible environment, and checkable criteria for determining whether the diagnosis or fix is correct.
This role requires hands-on, industry-level software engineering experience. You should be comfortable diagnosing real system failures, tracing problems through code, implementing fixes, and explaining how to verify engineering outcomes.
The following experience can help you create especially realistic and challenging tasks, though it is not listed as required.
Every major AI system depends on carefully prepared examples and expert evaluation. As a Software Engineering Task Author, you will help shape how AI agents understand debugging, integrations, configuration, and real-world software engineering work.
