About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Experts create examples, evaluate model behavior, and define what accurate, useful performance looks like so AI systems can improve.
In this role, your engineering judgment will help teach AI agents how to reason through realistic software failures, diagnose root causes, and produce correct, verifiable fixes.
Work directly on cutting-edge AI development
Apply professional expertise to realistic engineering scenarios
Help shape how advanced AI agents handle technical problems
The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Software Engineering AI Task Author to create expert-level tasks that train and evaluate advanced AI agents on realistic enterprise engineering work. You will transform authentic debugging scenarios into structured challenges involving integrations, logs, source-code traces, infrastructure, APIs, services, configuration, and CI/CD systems.
This opportunity is listed at the entry level, while the work itself requires hands-on, industry-level software engineering and debugging experience. It is a remote freelance engagement for engineers who can recreate production-like failures, define correct outcomes, and validate fixes.
Employment type: Contractor and part time
Schedule: 20+ hours per week
Location: Worldwide and fully remote
Primary language: English
What You'll Do
You will design realistic software engineering challenges and ensure that each task has a clear, technically sound path to resolution. Your work will combine task authoring, environment setup, implementation, verification, and evaluation design.
Write scoring rubrics with precise, checkable correctness criteria.
Set up realistic codebases, logs, alerts, and system states for plausible engineering scenarios.
Implement and verify the actual fix for each task so the challenge and rubric are reliable.
Validate outcomes in live or simulated environments where appropriate.
Adjust code complexity, log volume, failure modes, and ambiguity to calibrate task difficulty.
Review and correct AI-drafted task prompts and rubrics when provided.
Required Experience And Skills
This role is suited to engineers who are comfortable diagnosing real system failures and communicating technical correctness precisely. You should be able to trace issues across code, logs, services, and configuration, then implement and verify a dependable fix.
Hands-on software engineering experience debugging real system failures and tracing issues through source code and logs.
Fluency with Git, version control workflows, and code review practices.
Practical experience with APIs, services, infrastructure, configuration files, or CI/CD systems.
Experience reading logs, using observability tools, and tracing failures through codebases.
Ability to implement and verify fixes in live or simulated environments.
Ability to define precise, checkable criteria for engineering outcomes.
Strong written communication and close attention to detail when authoring prompts and rubrics.
Helpful Background
Experience in complex software environments can be useful when creating realistic engineering tasks. Familiarity with monitoring and incident-response workflows may also help you build credible scenarios and evaluation criteria.
Fintech experience
Enterprise SaaS experience
Regulated-industry software experience
Microservices or event-driven systems experience
Familiarity with Datadog, PagerDuty, Grafana, or similar observability platforms
