About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect contributors with real AI training projects, help you build a lasting portfolio, and hire contractors directly for specialized evaluation and QA roles.

This role is staffed and contracted by OpenTrain AI. Creating an OpenTrain account is free and is how you discover, apply, and manage work on the platform.

Why AI Training Work Matters

AI training is the human side of building intelligent systems: people prepare, review, and judge examples so models learn useful, accurate, and safe behavior. Contributors do flexible remote work that directly shapes how modern AI responds to social topics.

This sociology QA role sits at the intersection of social science and generative-AI evaluation: your expertise ensures outputs are evidence-aware, ethically informed, and consistent with project rubrics.

The Role

You will lead quality and consistency across sociology-focused OpenTrain projects. As a remote contractor you will review AI-generated sociology explanations, research summaries, social policy discussions, and trainer/QAs, then provide clear written feedback tied to project rubrics.

You will also monitor recurring quality issues, support onboarding, maintain documentation, coordinate updates for trainers and QAs, and help manage contributor activation when participation drops.

What You'll Do

Work day-to-day with text-based sociology outputs and human contributions, applying sociological expertise and rubric guidance to keep standards high.

  • Review sociology content and trainer/QA submissions for accuracy, nuance, and adherence to rubrics.
  • Evaluate theory application, methodological rigor, social context, and ethical reasoning in outputs.
  • Identify stereotyping, weak causal claims, unsupported generalizations, and other quality issues.
  • Provide precise written feedback and calibration notes to keep standards consistent across the team.
  • Support onboarding materials, FAQs, trackers, calibration tasks, and quality documentation.
  • Communicate workflow updates and question-handling via remote collaboration tools.
  • Help activate contributors and escalate recurring or critical issues when necessary.

Requirements

You must have demonstrable sociology training and experience reviewing work or conducting research. Strong written English and comfort with remote collaboration tools are required.

  • Degree in Sociology, Social Sciences, Social Research, Demography, Criminology, Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Public Policy, Anthropology, or a closely related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in sociology research, teaching, social policy analysis, academic review, or related workflows.
  • Strong command of sociological theory, institutions, inequality, culture, deviance, organizations, social change, demography, and research methods.
  • Experience with AI training, data annotation, LLM evaluation, social science QA, rubric-based review, or academic reviewing.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated sociology content against detailed rubrics and give precise written feedback.
  • Familiarity with bias review, ethical reasoning, and research-methods critique.
  • Comfort using remote collaboration tools such as Discord, Google Sheets, and Google Docs.

Schedule, Pay, and Logistics

This is a remote contractor, part-time role requiring 20+ hours per week. Work is text-focused (evaluation and RLHF-style rating) and conducted asynchronously with coordination through common collaboration tools.

Compensation is $65 USD per hour. OpenTrain hires and contracts for this role and handles contributor activation and coordination.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours/week.
  • Language: English (required).
  • Location: United States (contractor must be based in US).
  • Data type: Text; Label types: Evaluation rating, RLHF.

Who Should Apply and How It Works

This role is a fit for experienced sociologists, social researchers, or policy analysts who enjoy close, rubric-driven review work and providing constructive written feedback. If you have prior experience evaluating model outputs or supervising annotation quality, you’ll be well placed to succeed.
