About AI Training And Scientific Model Evaluation
AI training is the human work behind modern artificial intelligence. Specialists create examples, review model outputs, and develop evaluation materials that help AI systems become more accurate, reliable, and useful.
In this project, your scientific and programming expertise will help measure whether AI models can reason through structured STEM problems, produce correct code, and satisfy objective requirements.
The Scientific Coding Trainer Role
OpenTrain is recruiting a Scientific Coding AI Training Expert to create rigorous scientific programming tasks for training and evaluating frontier AI models. Chemistry and Python are especially relevant, while the broader work may span core STEM disciplines.
You will translate complex scientific concepts into precise, logically connected problem specifications. You will also build reliable reference implementations and tests so model performance can be evaluated consistently.
Role focus: scientific coding model evaluation
Core expertise: chemistry or a related STEM discipline and Python
Engagement: freelance contractor assignment
Schedule: 40 hours per week with four hours of overlap with PST
Contract length: eight weeks
Work arrangement: fully remote
Language: English
What You’ll Do
You will design tasks that are scientifically sound, reproducible, and capable of distinguishing correct from incorrect model outputs. Quality and review are central to the assignment, including refinement based on feedback and participation in project collaboration.
Write one primary scientific problem with at least three connected sub-problems that progress toward a solution.
Implement verified golden solutions in Python with complete unit test coverage.
Design test cases that distinguish correct outputs from incorrect or incomplete outputs.
Validate task structure against rubrics for scientific correctness, determinism, well-posedness, and discriminativeness.
Refine tasks in response to quality feedback and maintain a consistently high first-pass approval standard.
Participate in reviews, feedback sessions, and project standups during required overlap hours.
Requirements
This opportunity is suited to an advanced STEM specialist who can combine subject-matter judgment with strong scientific programming and evaluation skills. The listing is marked entry level, but the assignment requires substantial academic or equivalent expertise.
Master’s or PhD in chemistry, mathematics, physics, biology, computer science, or a related STEM discipline.
Advanced STEM expertise, especially in chemistry or a related discipline.
Strong Python programming skills and experience with scientific computing.
Ability to write rigorous scientific problems with clear constraints and expected outputs.
Ability to create verified solutions and discriminative tests.
Careful judgment regarding scientific correctness, determinism, and test quality.
Experience or familiarity with AI data annotation, LLM evaluation frameworks, coding benchmarks, scientific writing, or research.
Experience with NumPy, SciPy, SymPy, or comparable scientific tools.
Helpful Background
Published research or academic project experience in a STEM field can support success in this role, particularly when it shows that you can formulate technical problems, implement reproducible solutions, and compare competing outputs against objective standards.
Experience assessing technical outputs against objective criteria
