About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help contributors discover specialized projects, build a unified AI training portfolio, and grow a durable freelance career working on the human side of AI.

About AI Training Work

AI training (data labeling and human feedback work) is how modern models learn from examples and expert review. Contributors prepare, evaluate, and refine text used to teach models—directly shaping how AI explains, solves problems, and reasons about technical subjects like physics.

The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting Physics Professors and Researchers to create and review physics problems, evaluate model outputs for scientific accuracy and pedagogical quality, and refine AI-generated explanations. This is a remote contractor role that focuses on text tasks: evaluation ratings and text generation/editing.

  • Employment type: Contractor, part-time.
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours per week.
  • Pay: USD $70–$90 per hour (pay-per-hour).
  • Work type: Text data (EVALUATION_RATING and TEXT_GENERATION), asynchronous workflow.
  • Languages: English required. Role is open worldwide.

What You'll Do

  • Develop and review physics problems, worked solutions, and explanatory content across physics sub-disciplines.
  • Evaluate AI-generated outputs for scientific validity, logical correctness, clarity, and educational value.
  • Refine and edit model explanations for accuracy, completeness, and pedagogical effectiveness.
  • Provide high-level feedback on complex research topics, theoretical concepts, and problem-solving approaches.
  • Help standardize content-review best practices and collaborate with project leads and fellow experts.
  • Produce concise, constructive written feedback in an asynchronous workflow.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics, or active PhD candidacy with substantial research and teaching experience.
  • Strong expertise in theoretical and applied physics and comfort across sub-disciplines.
  • Experience teaching, developing curriculum, mentoring students, or reviewing scientific research.
  • Proven ability to evaluate technical writing for scientific validity, clarity, and educational value.
  • Excellent written communication, attention to detail, and ability to work independently in async remote settings.

Who Should Apply

This role is designed for physics academics and researchers who enjoy explaining concepts, improving instructional content, and scrutinizing technical outputs. Ideal applicants are comfortable critiquing solutions, suggesting pedagogical improvements, and contributing clear written feedback in a distributed team.

  • University faculty, postdocs, or advanced PhD candidates with teaching or curriculum development experience.
  • Researchers who publish or peer-review physics work and can judge conceptual rigor.
  • Experts who prefer flexible, remote, part-time contract work and can commit 20+ hours weekly.

Compensation, Schedule & How It Works

Work is paid hourly at USD $70–$90 per hour on a contractor basis. Assignments are text-focused and routed through OpenTrain’s project workflows; you'll perform evaluation ratings and textual editing/generation tasks and submit concise written feedback asynchronously. OpenTrain handles contracting and project assignments—apply and manage your work through the platform.

  • Pay structure: pay-per-hour in USD; range $70 to $90/hr.
  • Typical commitment: 20+ hours per week, part-time and flexible.
  • Workflow: asynchronous remote collaboration, independent task completion, periodic coordination with project leads.
