About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for people building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help experts find and manage AI-training work, build a single portfolio of proof-of-work, and turn short-term projects into durable freelance careers.

About AI training work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building AI models: people create, evaluate, and refine examples that teach models how to reason and communicate. This work is remote, highly flexible, and lets specialists directly shape how state-of-the-art systems behave.

Many projects require deep domain knowledge — your physics expertise will help models answer technical questions accurately, solve problems, and explain complex concepts clearly.

The role

OpenTrain is hiring a Physics AI Training Specialist to produce, review, and improve text-based training materials and to evaluate model outputs for scientific accuracy. This is a contractor, part-time role with under 20 hours per week of expected commitment.

  • Work type: Contract, part-time (less than 20 hrs/week).
  • Data type and tasks: Text generation and evaluation/rating for AI model training.
  • World-wide: Remote contributors accepted; English required.

What you'll do

  • Analyze real-world physics data, concepts, and scenarios to create robust training inputs.
  • Generate advanced physics content and problem sets suitable for model learning.
  • Review and refine model outputs, providing expert feedback on accuracy and reasoning.
  • Translate complex theories and phenomena into clear, accessible explanations.
  • Identify gaps in training data and recommend improvements for quality assurance.
  • Collaborate with OpenTrain stakeholders to align deliverables with project goals.

Requirements

  • PhD in Physics or equivalent doctoral-level training (required).
  • Strong background in theoretical and applied physics.
  • Experience creating or reviewing physics educational or technical materials.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication for explaining complex scientific topics.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and comfort in evolving project environments.
  • Familiarity or interest in AI, data science, or digital training environments is helpful but not required.

Pay, schedule, and logistics

Rate: USD $80–$90 per hour (paid per hour).

Hours: Less than 20 hours per week; schedule is flexible and remote.

Engagement: Contractor status — you will be engaged directly by OpenTrain on a part-time contract.

Who should apply and how it works

This role is ideal for PhD-trained physicists who want to apply their expertise to shape how AI systems understand and explain physics. The position is treated as entry-level within AI training (no prior annotation experience required) but requires advanced domain credentials.

To apply, use your OpenTrain profile to submit your background and examples of technical or educational physics work. Building a strong OpenTrain profile helps you show credible experience and discover similar opportunities over time.
