About OpenTrain

OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role. OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling, helping contributors discover projects, build a professional profile, and grow their experience in this fast-moving field.

This contract opportunity lets you apply your scientific expertise to practical AI evaluation work while developing experience in a growing area of technology.

About AI Training and Evaluation

AI training is the human side of building modern artificial intelligence. Scientific specialists help create realistic problems, evaluate model outputs, and establish reliable standards so AI systems can reason more accurately about technical subjects.

In this role, your physical sciences judgment will help shape evaluation materials that test experimental analysis, computational modeling, numerical accuracy, interpretation, and adherence to scientific protocols.

The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking a Physical Sciences AI Evaluation Research Assistant to create high-quality evaluation material for AI systems reasoning about scientific problems. You will translate authentic expertise in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field into realistic tasks, research artifacts, methodological guidance, and detailed grading standards.

The role is classified as entry level and requires at least two years of hands-on physical sciences research or applied technical project experience. It is a part-time contractor position available worldwide, with work conducted in professional written English.

  • Contractor position
  • Part-time engagement
  • 20+ hours per week
  • Worldwide opportunity
  • English-language work
  • $30–$50 USD per hour

What You’ll Do

You will develop evaluation resources that reflect complex technical challenges rather than simplified textbook exercises. Your work will combine scientific reasoning, quantitative analysis, research documentation, and careful assessment of AI-generated results.

  • Design advanced evaluation tasks covering experimental analysis, computational modeling, and technical reasoning.
  • Source, synthesize, and curate research artifacts such as CSV datasets, spreadsheets, computational results, and scientific references.
  • Create realistic scenarios and problem statements based on complex physical sciences challenges.
  • Define quantitative solutions and rigorous methodological approaches for each task.
  • Develop grading rubrics with 35 or more items covering technical rigor, numerical accuracy, interpretation quality, and scientific protocol adherence.
  • Document experimental reasoning and protocols clearly enough to support reproducibility and consistent rubric use.
  • Collaborate with project leads to maintain methodological integrity and benchmark relevance.

Required Qualifications

You should bring a strong academic or applied foundation in the physical sciences, along with the ability to assess technical work carefully and document it precisely. Scientific judgment, protocol fidelity, and rubric fidelity are central to the role.

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field.
  • At least two years of hands-on physical sciences research or applied technical project experience.
  • Strong quantitative analysis skills and methodological rigor in scientific contexts.
  • Ability to document complex technical procedures and results in clear, professional written English.
  • Comfort working with technical data and formats such as PDFs and spreadsheets.
  • Sound judgment when evaluating numerical accuracy, scientific methods, and protocol adherence.

Helpful Background and Engagement Details

Experience authoring or evaluating scientific rubrics or assessments is helpful. Background translating complex research methods into clear problem statements and measurable evaluation criteria is also valuable.

AI training and data-labeling work is often flexible and remote, allowing contributors to apply specialized expertise to cutting-edge technology from anywhere. Creating an OpenTrain account is free, and your profile can help you build a durable portfolio of AI training experience.

  • Data types include documents and scientific research artifacts.
  • Work includes evaluation rating, text generation, and data collection.
  • Hourly pay range: $30–$50 USD.
  • Expected availability: 20 or more hours per week.
