The Role

You will work as a Mechanical Engineering AI Training Expert to review, generate, and evaluate AI-produced engineering content. This is an hourly, remote contractor role focused on assessing correctness, reasoning quality, and the clarity of model responses, and producing high-quality explanations and model solutions.

• Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
• Time commitment: 20+ hours/week.
• Rate: up to $70/hour.

What You'll Do

Your day-to-day tasks center on examining AI outputs and producing expert annotations and solutions that help models learn better engineering reasoning.

• Review AI-generated engineering solutions for accuracy, methodology, and physical plausibility.
• Evaluate step-by-step reasoning, unit/dimensional consistency, assumptions, and final answers.
• Write clear, high-quality explanations and model solutions for problems.
• Rate and compare multiple responses based on correctness, completeness, and reasoning quality.
• Flag methodological or conceptual errors and fact-check critical assumptions.

Requirements

To succeed you'll need a solid technical foundation, strong written English, and the ability to work independently in a remote contractor workflow.

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or Engineering Physics (required).
• Strong fundamentals in mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, applied physics, engineering math, and system modeling.
• Ability to evaluate technical solutions for correctness, methodology, units/dimensional consistency, assumptions, and physical plausibility.
• Minimum English proficiency: C1.
• Reliable, self-directed, and able to deliver consistent quality in a remote contractor workflow.

Helpful Background

These qualifications are optional but will make you more effective and competitive for the role.

• Experience applying basic design principles (requirements, constraints, margins, trade-offs) in real engineering contexts.
• Previous experience with AI data training, annotation, or technical reviewing.

Project Details, Tools & Label Types

This role focuses on text-based tasks: reviewing and authoring engineering solutions and rating model outputs. You will use OpenTrain’s contractor workflow to receive tasks, submit annotations, and track your work.

• Data type: Text.
• Primary label types: Evaluation rating and prompt-response writing (SFT-style).
• Labeling software: Provided via OpenTrain contractor tools.

Eligibility, Hours & How To Apply

Open to contributors in selected countries listed below; fluency in English (C1) is required. Commit to at least 20 hours per week and deliver thoughtful, consistent technical reviews.
