About this role
OpenTrain is recruiting for a remote contractor Mechanical Design Engineer focused on CAD and manufacturing. You will contribute mechanical design expertise to AI training work by creating and interpreting engineering drawings, translating design requirements into manufacturable specifications, and improving technical documentation. The role centers on precise engineering judgment, clear communication, and practical design-for-manufacture decisions.

What you will do
Create and interpret professional engineering drawings with the details needed for manufacturing. Translate complex requirements into accurate, manufacturable CAD specifications. Produce detailed 2D and 3D models using tools such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, Inventor, Creo, and NX, with FreeCAD used for model interpretation or reference. Apply drafting standards, dimensioning, tolerancing, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing principles to deliverables. Document manufacturing processes and design intent in clear written and verbal formats. Review and improve engineering documentation for clarity and manufacturability. Apply design-for-manufacture knowledge to optimize parts for real production scenarios.

Required skills
Extensive professional experience in mechanical design, including taking parts from concept through manufacturing. Expert proficiency across multiple industry-standard CAD platforms. Hands-on knowledge of FreeCAD for interpreting or referencing models. Strong command of drafting standards, GD&T, tolerancing, and manufacturing-oriented technical documentation. Deep understanding of manufacturing processes, material selection, and design-for-manufacture best practices. Clear written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain engineering decisions. Experience collaborating remotely and giving constructive professional feedback.
