The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Materials Science and Engineering AI Task Author to create expert-level evaluations of model reasoning. The role combines deep technical judgment with the design, testing, and refinement of AI evaluation tasks across materials science, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering.
The work is remote and freelance, with a default commitment of 40 hours per week. Daily onboarding sessions and multiple office hours are available to support your work.

What You'll Do
You will translate authentic technical experience into challenging, realistic tasks that reveal how AI models approach engineering problems. You will also test those tasks, study model performance, and refine the evaluation design until it meaningfully distinguishes strong and weak reasoning.
Author domain-authentic tasks based on work you have actually performed
Create data rooms and grading criteria for consistent, objective evaluation
Run tasks against AI models and analyze successful and unsuccessful reasoning
Refine tasks until they discriminate effectively between response quality levels
Collaborate with project leads and other technical experts
Define what high-quality engineering work looks like
Explain the correct answer and the reasoning behind incorrect answers
Required Expertise
