About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help people start and grow careers teaching AI by connecting contributors to projects, building unified training portfolios, and offering tools and resources to work on cutting-edge annotation and evaluation tasks.

We hire and contract directly for specialized AI training roles. This posting is for an OpenTrain AI contractor who will help ensure Kotlin-focused training output meets high technical and stylistic standards.

About AI training work

AI training (data labeling, annotation, and human evaluation) is the human side of building modern AI systems. Contributors review model outputs, annotate examples, and rate or improve responses so models learn to behave correctly and safely.

This work is often remote and part-time, and it directly influences how state-of-the-art systems behave. Many projects need strong domain knowledge rather than formal credentials—here, that domain is Kotlin and JVM/Android development.

The role

You will be the Kotlin Quality Assurance Lead for Kotlin-focused AI training projects. In this contractor role you will review AI-generated Kotlin code and trainer QA submissions, evaluate outputs against project guidelines, and provide precise written feedback.

Your focus will be ensuring contributor output is executable, idiomatic, type-safe, coroutine-aware, Android- and JVM-aware, secure, well-tested, and aligned with rubrics and style guides.

What you'll do

  • Review Kotlin code, Android and JVM snippets, coroutine workflows, tests, and written explanations for correctness and clarity.
  • Provide detailed written feedback and ongoing quality guidance to contributors to improve code quality and rubric adherence.
  • Communicate Kotlin-specific standards and guideline changes to the contributor community.
  • Flag insecure, misleading, non-executable, or non-production-ready recommendations and propose corrective guidance.
  • Help improve QA processes by identifying recurring quality gaps and suggesting fixes.
  • Support activation tracking, onboarding calls, and maintenance of documentation, style guides, trackers, FAQs, honeypots, and onboarding materials.

Requirements

You must meet the core technical and communication requirements below. These are essential for evaluating code, explaining issues clearly in English, and holding contributors to consistently high standards.

  • Strong Kotlin experience across syntax, null safety, data classes, sealed classes, generics, extension functions, collections, lambdas, coroutines, flows, and exception handling.
  • Ability to evaluate code correctness, readability, maintainability, and rubric adherence.
  • Familiarity with Android development or JVM backend development and Java interoperability.
  • Clear written English and comfort giving technical feedback to contributors.
  • Experience with code review, QA, AI training, LLM evaluation, or mentoring is strongly preferred.

Helpful background

  • Experience with Android, Jetpack Compose, Gradle, Ktor, Spring Boot, JUnit, MockK, Espresso, GitHub, CI/CD, and app architecture patterns.
  • Experience leading or supporting remote teams of trainers, engineers, reviewers, or QAs.
  • Comfort working with Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, and project management systems.

Compensation, schedule, and location

This is a contract, part-time role at $65.00 USD per hour. The expected time commitment is 20+ hours per week.

Language: English. Location: United States only (applicants must be based in the US). OpenTrain AI is the hiring organization and will manage contracting and payments.

Who should apply and how it works

Apply if you are an experienced Kotlin developer or engineer who enjoys teaching, reviewing code, and improving others' output. Ideal applicants are comfortable with rubric-based evaluation and giving constructive written feedback.

To apply, create an OpenTrain account, complete your profile, and submit your application to this role. If selected, you'll be contracted by OpenTrain AI and onboarded to the project with guidelines, examples, and onboarding materials.
