About AI Training Work

AI training is the human work behind modern artificial intelligence. Contributors create examples, demonstrations, and evaluations that help AI systems understand how real software and professional workflows are used.

In this project, your KiCad expertise will help produce realistic electronics design scenarios and clearly documented computer workflows. Your practical demonstrations can help train AI systems to reason through schematic, PCB layout, verification, and fabrication tasks.

  • Work on cutting-edge AI training projects
  • Apply professional electronics and CAD knowledge to realistic scenarios
  • Support AI systems learning practical engineering workflows

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a KiCad PCB Design Task Specialist to create challenging, realistic tasks based on practical schematic and PCB design workflows. You will prepare reproducible project environments, complete the required work in KiCad, record the process on your computer, and review the final submission for technical accuracy and clarity.

  • Role type: Part-time contractor
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours per week
  • Experience level: Entry level
  • Working language: English
  • Data format: Video

What You'll Do

You will build complete task packages that another contributor can understand and reproduce. Each package should include clear context, goals, circuit details, project files, component notes, references, and a prepared starting state.

You will also record yourself completing the workflow and verify that the documentation and recording accurately represent realistic electronics engineering work.

  • Create realistic and challenging KiCad schematic and PCB design tasks
  • Prepare KiCad installations, project files, component libraries, references, and required assets
  • Perform schematic capture, component placement, footprint assignment, and PCB routing
  • Demonstrate layer management, vias, zones, libraries, and symbol or footprint editing
  • Run and explain electrical rules checks and design rules checks
  • Generate and validate Gerber and drill files
  • Organize projects and troubleshoot connectivity, library, and schematic-to-PCB update issues
  • Record computer-based workflows clearly and accurately
  • Review recordings and documentation for completeness, realism, and technical accuracy

Required Skills and Qualifications

This role requires hands-on KiCad experience and a strong understanding of electronics design workflows. You should be comfortable navigating engineering software, preparing reproducible starting states, managing project files, and following detailed project guidelines consistently.

Clear written and spoken English is important because task documentation and workflow communication must be understandable to reviewers and future users of the training data.

  • Hands-on experience with KiCad schematic capture, PCB layout, footprints, routing, and design-rule checks
  • Understanding of symbols, nets, layers, vias, zones, libraries, ERC, DRC, and fabrication outputs
  • Ability to diagnose connectivity, ERC, DRC, library, and schematic-to-PCB update issues
  • Knowledge of Gerber and drill-file generation, fabrication settings, and export validation
  • Ability to create reproducible tasks with prepared files, libraries, references, and starting states
  • Ability to record computer workflows and explain technical steps clearly
  • English proficiency at B2 level or higher
  • Careful attention to detail and reliable self-direction
  • Experience in electronics, electrical engineering, embedded systems, hardware prototyping, CAD, or technical documentation is helpful
