About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help people start and grow freelance careers teaching AI by centralizing opportunities, letting contributors build a unified training portfolio, and making it easy to apply and track work.

OpenTrain contributors play a direct role in how modern AI systems learn. If you care about quality journalism and want to shape how models read, write, and reason, this platform connects your experience to real training projects.

About AI Training Work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building intelligent systems: people provide the examples, edits, and evaluations models need to improve. This project focuses on written content — creating original journalism and evaluating model-written text — so your reporting and editorial judgment will train next-generation language models.

Work in this field is typically 100% remote and flexible, making it a strong fit for freelance journalists who want predictable contract work while continuing other projects.

The Role

OpenTrain is recruiting expert journalists to research, pitch, write, edit, and proofread real-world reporting used to train and evaluate AI systems. This is a remote contract role for experienced reporters who can produce publishable-quality content and apply rigorous editorial standards when creating and assessing text.

You will produce original articles and also perform evaluation tasks (rating and assessing model outputs), helping models learn both to generate and to judge high-quality journalism.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours per week
  • Data type: Text; Labeling tasks: Text generation and evaluation/rating
  • Location: Remote — candidates must reside in US, GB, CA, AU, or NZ
  • Language: English

What You'll Do

This role blends reporting, writing, and editorial evaluation. Expect a mix of original content creation and judging model outputs against editorial standards.

  • Edit and proofread articles to ensure clarity, consistency, and adherence to editorial standards

  • Monitor current events, trends, and issues relevant to assigned beats
  • Evaluate and rate model-generated text to guide improvements in AI outputs
  • Uphold journalistic ethics and media-law best practices in all work

Requirements

You must be an experienced journalist with a strong portfolio of published work and a proven ability to deliver high-quality reporting on deadline. The role demands excellent written and verbal communication, careful fact-checking, and independent time management in a remote setting.

  • Proven experience as a journalist and a strong portfolio of published writing
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Experience conducting interviews and synthesizing complex information
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet tight deadlines
