The Role

OpenTrain is seeking an Electrical Design and Power Systems Specialist for a remote, short-term project supporting AI training through technical problem-solving and expert evaluation. You will apply practical industry judgment to electrical designs and system-level engineering challenges across industrial facilities, infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, renewable energy, building services, data centers, and energy storage.

The role is a contractor and part-time engagement with a stated commitment of 40 hours per week. Structured project details also identify availability of 20 or more hours per week. Compensation is $70-$85 per hour, with English as the required working language.

What You'll Do

You will develop, analyze, and evaluate electrical designs against technical requirements, specifications, and expected system performance. The work involves reviewing technical materials, validating engineering reasoning, and identifying practical improvements or potential design issues.

  • Review distribution systems, power systems, circuits, control panels, switchgear, motor-control systems, and related components.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, layouts, equipment specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Perform load-flow, voltage-drop, short-circuit, protection-coordination, and equipment-sizing calculations.
  • Assess design alternatives, engineering trade-offs, system performance, potential design issues, and possible improvements.
  • Validate calculations, assumptions, technical approaches, vendor drawings, equipment datasheets, technical submittals, and engineering designs.

Required Qualifications

This project requires hands-on industry experience as an electrical design engineer, electrical engineer, or electrical design specialist, along with a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in electrical engineering or a related discipline. Candidates should be able to apply practical engineering judgment to real-world systems and evaluate work against applicable electrical requirements and standards.

  • Strong understanding of electrical system design and power systems.
  • Knowledge of low- and medium-voltage systems, electrical protection, equipment sizing, and power distribution.
  • Experience designing or evaluating systems in industrial, infrastructure, manufacturing, energy, renewable energy, building-services, data-center, or energy-storage settings.
  • Ability to perform and interpret load-flow, voltage-drop, short-circuit, protection-coordination, and equipment-sizing studies.
  • Practical knowledge of switchgear, transformers, motors, cables, and low- and medium-voltage power distribution.
  • Ability to assess schematics, technical submittals, vendor drawings, design assumptions, and engineering trade-offs against applicable standards.

Helpful Experience

The following background is helpful but is not listed as required. Familiarity with engineering software, power studies, automation, instrumentation, vendor documentation, and recognized electrical standards can support success in the project.

  • AutoCAD Electrical, ETAP, SKM Power Tools, EPLAN, Revit, or equivalent engineering tools.
