About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect experts with remote, flexible projects that train and improve state-of-the-art AI systems while helping contributors build a unified portfolio and grow a durable freelance career.

About AI training work

AI training — also called data labeling, annotation, or human feedback — is the human side of building intelligent systems. Contributors prepare, review, and score examples that teach models how to reason, explain, and produce reliable outputs.

This role focuses on economics content: you will shape how models handle explanations, calculations, policy interpretation, and data-driven reasoning across training pipelines.

The role

OpenTrain is hiring an Economics Quality Assurance Lead to oversee quality and consistency across economics-focused AI training projects. This is a remote contractor role for contributors based in the US who can commit 20+ hours per week.

You will review AI-generated economics content and trainer or QA submissions against detailed rubrics, give precise written feedback, maintain documentation, and help scale QA processes and onboarding for distributed teams.

What you'll do

  • Review economics AI training work for accuracy, reasoning quality, assumption handling, and rubric adherence.
  • Evaluate explanations, step-by-step reasoning, calculations, graphs, policy claims, and data interpretation for clarity and correctness.
  • Identify recurring quality issues and provide clear, actionable written feedback to trainers and QAs.
  • Maintain and update project documentation: style guides, FAQs, trackers, example sets, and onboarding materials.
  • Support onboarding and training for remote expert teams and help keep contributor workflows active and organized.
  • Help identify workflow improvements and design scalable QA processes and checklists.

Requirements

  • Strong background in Economics, Applied Economics, Econometrics, Public Policy, Finance, Statistics, Mathematics, or a closely related field.
  • Proven experience reviewing economics writing, data interpretation, policy analysis, econometric results, or related analytical workflows.
  • Solid understanding of microeconomics and macroeconomics topics: supply/demand, elasticity, externalities, monetary/fiscal policy, inflation, unemployment, trade, and growth.
  • Ability to judge economic accuracy, identify flawed assumptions, causal errors, misleading graphs, and unsupported conclusions.
  • Strong written English skills for precise feedback and team coordination.
  • Located in the United States and able to commit 20+ hours per week as a contractor.

Preferred skills and leadership experience

  • Familiarity with regression analysis, causal inference, economic modeling, and common tools (Excel, R, Python, Stata).
  • Experience leading or supporting remote teams of analysts, researchers, reviewers, educators, annotators, or QAs.
  • Experience with AI training, LLM evaluation, rubric-based review, or academic peer review is a strong plus.
  • Comfort turning technical findings into clear onboarding materials, examples, and rubrics.

How it works and compensation

This is a part-time contractor engagement administered through OpenTrain. You will be paid hourly and expected to track time according to project procedures. The role requires careful, written feedback and ongoing coordination with remote contributors.

OpenTrain provides the project framework, documentation templates, and onboarding support — you bring the economics expertise and quality leadership.

  • Rate: $90.00 USD per hour (PAY_PER_HOUR).
  • Commitment: 20+ hours per week, remote (US only).
  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time.
  • Language: English required.
  • How to apply: Create an OpenTrain profile, highlight economics QA experience, and submit your application via the platform.
