About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. People with specialized knowledge create examples, evaluate model outputs, and review technical content so that modern AI systems can produce more accurate and reliable results.
In this role, your mathematical reasoning and scientific programming expertise will help shape how advanced language models handle challenging quantitative problems.
The Role
OpenTrain is recruiting a Computational Mathematics AI Problem Designer to create and solve challenging scientific problems used in the development and evaluation of advanced language models. You will produce original, research-grade content and rigorously justified solutions for graduate-level quantitative tasks.
The work combines computational mathematics, scientific coding, structured difficulty assessment, and detailed quality review. This is an individual freelance contractor assignment performed remotely.
- Planned engagement length: three months
- Commitment options: 20, 30, or 40 hours per week
- Minimum commitment: 20 hours per week
- Required availability: at least four hours of overlap with Pacific Standard Time
- Work arrangement: remote, part-time contract
- Working language: English
What You'll Do
You will formulate technically demanding problems, solve them accurately, and assess whether both the mathematical reasoning and computational implementation meet rigorous quality standards. You will also work with reviewers and team leads to refine content based on feedback.
- Develop original research-grade and graduate-level computational mathematics problems
- Use Python and scientific coding to create quantitative problem content
- Define problem categories, secondary tags, and appropriate difficulty levels
- Solve formulated problems with accuracy, reliability, and logical coherence
- Evaluate the accuracy of problems and solutions through structured quality review
- Verify mathematical correctness and the quality of computational implementations
- Document reasoning clearly and incorporate reviewer feedback promptly
Required Qualifications
This opportunity requires advanced academic and technical expertise in computational mathematics. Although the assignment is classified as entry level in the supplied role data, the required qualifications include doctoral-level study and peer-reviewed research experience.
- PhD or current PhD candidacy in computational mathematics
- At least one published peer-reviewed paper
- Advanced Python programming for scientific computing
- Ability to formulate original graduate-level quantitative problems
- Strong analytical reasoning and logical thinking
- Strong quantitative problem-solving skills
- Ability to verify mathematical correctness and logical coherence
- Clear written and verbal technical communication
- Ability to document reasoning and incorporate review feedback
Who Should Apply
This role is well suited to computational mathematics researchers who enjoy translating difficult concepts into precise, solvable problems. Research experience and the ability to judge both mathematical validity and computational quality are especially relevant.
It may be a strong fit for a current doctoral candidate or PhD holder seeking flexible, remote work that applies specialized expertise to the rapidly growing field of AI training.
- Researchers with computational mathematics experience
- PhD candidates and graduates with published peer-reviewed research
- Scientific programmers with advanced Python skills
- Specialists comfortable creating original technical problems
- Candidates who can communicate complex reasoning clearly
