About OpenTrain and AI training work

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect expert contributors with specialized AI training projects and help people build a durable freelance career teaching AI systems how to behave.

AI training (data labeling, annotation, and human-feedback work) is the human side of building modern AI. Contributors provide the expert judgments and examples that state-of-the-art models learn from — a fast-growing, flexible way to work remotely and shape AI behavior in real scientific domains.

  • Remote, flexible work that fits alongside research, consulting, or other jobs.
  • Opportunities range from entry-level annotation to expert evaluation and RLHF for domain-sensitive models.
  • Contributors directly influence model accuracy and safety in real scientific workflows.

The role

OpenTrain AI is hiring a Computational Biology AI Evaluation Expert to review, annotate, and benchmark AI outputs in real-world computational biology scenarios. You will judge scientific accuracy, relevance, and usefulness of model responses, review biological pipelines, and produce clear, actionable feedback to improve model behavior.

  • Evaluate AI-generated answers in genomics, transcriptomics, structural biology, and systems biology.
  • Produce concise written assessments that can be consumed by technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What you'll do

  • Rate and annotate AI-generated responses for scientific accuracy, relevance, and usefulness in computational biology contexts.
  • Benchmark model outputs against expected analyses, workflows, or experimental interpretations.
  • Review biological workflows and pipelines to identify strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for model improvement.
  • Document findings with clear rationale, examples, and actionable recommendations.
  • Communicate complex scientific concepts clearly in written form and when asked, verbally.

Requirements

  • PhD in Biology, Bioinformatics, or a closely related field, or equivalent industry or research experience.
  • Hands-on experience with data-driven biological research and computational analysis (genomics, transcriptomics, structural or systems biology).
  • Demonstrated scientific reasoning, analytical thinking, and ability to evaluate biological results for correctness.
  • Experience with Python, R, Bash, or related scientific scripting tools.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated scientific outputs for accuracy and relevance and to document judgments clearly.

Helpful background (nice to have)

  • Familiarity with NGS pipelines and tools such as BWA, GATK, STAR, Salmon.
  • Experience with single-cell analysis tools such as Seurat or Scanpy.
  • Hands-on knowledge of structural biology tools (AlphaFold, PyMOL) or CRISPR workflows.
  • Published research or open-source contributions in computational biology or bioinformatics.
  • Prior exposure to evaluating AI/ML or LLM outputs in biological contexts is a plus.

Compensation, schedule, and logistics

This is a part-time contractor role requiring 20+ hours per week. Work remotely from anywhere; candidates must be comfortable working in English.

Pay: $40–$60 USD per hour (pay varies by experience and scope). Employment: Contractor, part-time. Data type: text — tasks include evaluation ratings and RLHF-style judgments.

  • Labeling types: EVALUATION_RATING and RLHF.
  • Worldwide applicants accepted; English required.
  • Work primarily involves reviewing and annotating text outputs and documenting evaluations.
