About Clinical AI Training

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Clinical experts review model responses, identify unsafe or unsupported reasoning, and define the standards that help models produce more useful and responsible medical outputs.

This work gives experienced physicians a direct role in shaping cutting-edge AI systems while applying their clinical judgment to structured evaluation, writing, and benchmark design.

The Role

OpenTrain is seeking a senior clinical medicine domain expert to improve how frontier AI models reason about real clinical work. You will review medical knowledge tasks and model outputs, write instruction specifications and golden solutions, and design clinical evaluation benchmarks.

This is a hybrid engagement based in the Bay Area, California. The role is expected to require 40 hours per week for an initial six-month period, with on-site work alongside the project team when required. The structured engagement is listed as contractor and part-time work with a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week.

  • Pay: $70 to $110 per hour
  • Location: Bay Area, California, United States
  • Work arrangement: Hybrid, with on-site work when required
  • Initial duration: Six months
  • Expected role commitment: 40 hours per week
  • Engagement type: Contractor and part-time
  • Working language: English

What You’ll Do

You will translate expert clinical judgment into clear evaluation standards that can be applied consistently across medical AI training tasks. The work combines careful review, precise writing, and collaboration with research and program management teams.

  • Review clinical knowledge tasks and model outputs for quality, completeness, and safety.
  • Identify missing behaviors, thin reasoning, and unsafe or off-guideline recommendations.
  • Write high-quality instruction specifications for clinical tasks.
  • Produce golden solutions that define correct clinical responses.
  • Design challenging clinical tasks and evaluation sets that test model reasoning.
  • Work with researchers and specialists to maintain consistent standards.
  • Translate tacit clinical judgment into explicit, usable criteria.

Required Qualifications

This role requires advanced medical training, substantial post-residency practice, active U.S. licensure, and senior clinical progression. Applicants should also be comfortable evaluating large language model behavior and communicating detailed feedback in writing.

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.
  • Completed residency in a recognized specialty.
  • At least four years of post-residency clinical practice.
  • Genuine specialization in a defined clinical specialty.
  • Active, unrestricted license to practice medicine in at least one U.S. state.
  • Board certification in your specialty.
  • Senior progression such as Attending Physician, Medical Director, Division Chief, or Chief Medical Officer.
  • Hands-on working use of large language models.
  • Ability to distinguish well-reasoned answers from plausible-sounding but incorrect answers.
  • Experience writing instruction specifications and golden solutions for clinical tasks.
  • Excellent written communication and precise feedback skills.
  • Willingness to be based in the Bay Area and work on-site when required.

Who Should Apply

This opportunity is suited to a senior physician who wants to apply real-world clinical expertise to the development and evaluation of advanced AI. It is especially relevant for specialists who can explain not only whether a response is correct, but also why its reasoning, safety, and clinical guidance meet or miss professional standards.

  • Senior physicians with an established specialty practice.
  • Clinicians experienced in reviewing complex medical reasoning.
  • Medical leaders who can turn professional judgment into explicit evaluation criteria.
  • Physicians who have hands-on experience using large language models.
