  • Centralized platform to build a career in AI training and data labeling
  • Work with remote teams to shape how state-of-the-art AI systems behave

About AI training work

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human work that helps models learn correct, safe, and useful behavior. Tasks include reviewing explanations, verifying calculations, rating model outputs, and writing clear feedback for trainers and reviewers.

These roles are often fully remote, flexible in hours, and accessible to people with domain expertise rather than prior AI industry experience.

  • 100% remote and flexible—fit work around other commitments
  • Contributors directly influence model safety, correctness, and behavior

The role

As a Civil Engineering QA Lead you will review AI-generated civil engineering content and the QA work of trainers and reviewers for correctness, reasoning, unit consistency, safety, clarity, formatting, and adherence to rubrics and standards.

You will provide precise written feedback, maintain and update QA documentation (style guides, example sets, honeypots, calibration tasks), support onboarding and training calls, and surface recurring issues across remote technical workflows.

  • Position type: hourly contractor, part-time
  • Primary focus: evaluation and leadership of QA processes for civil engineering content

What you'll do

Daily work centers on technical review, feedback, documentation, and remote coordination to keep quality consistent across distributed teams.

  • Review explanations, calculations, diagrams, and problem-solving workflows for correctness and clarity
  • Check for missing units, flawed assumptions, unsafe recommendations, standards issues, and rubric non-compliance
  • Provide structured written feedback to trainers and QAs and align work with project guidelines
  • Create and maintain style guides, FAQs, trackers, examples, honeypots, calibration tasks, and onboarding materials
  • Support onboarding sessions and training calls and recommend process improvements
  • Communicate quality updates clearly using remote team tools and trackers

Requirements

You must be able to evaluate technical work against detailed rubrics, identify calculation and safety issues, and communicate corrective feedback clearly in English.

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering field
  • 3+ years of civil engineering, structural, geotechnical, transportation, construction, or technical review experience
  • Strong understanding of statics, structural analysis, soil mechanics, foundations, hydraulics, transportation systems, and construction materials
  • Ability to verify calculations, units, assumptions, loads, and safety-critical reasoning
  • Experience evaluating technical writing against detailed rubrics
  • Comfort giving structured written feedback to trainers and QAs and coordinating remotely
  • Strong English communication skills for technical feedback and team coordination
  • Experience with AI training, rubric-based LLM evaluation, or remote QA workflows is strongly preferred

Helpful background

The following skills and experiences are not required but will make you more effective in the role and may influence assignment to higher-complexity projects.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, ETABS, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro, SAFE, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, ArcGIS/QGIS, Bluebeam, Excel, MATLAB, or Python
  • Experience leading remote teams of trainers, annotators, reviewers, engineers, technical writers, or QAs

Pay, logistics, and how to apply

This is an hourly contractor role for US-based contributors. The role requires 20+ hours per week and pays up to $105/hour. Work is remote and coordinated through OpenTrain AI.

You will be working on text-based evaluation and RLHF-style rating tasks (label types: EVALUATION_RATING, RLHF). OpenTrain manages contracting and payments for all contributors.

  • Pay: up to $105/hour (PAY_PER_HOUR, USD)
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours/week; remote (US only)
  • Employment types: Contractor, Part-time
  • Language: English required
  • To apply: create or sign in to your OpenTrain account, complete your profile with relevant civil engineering experience, and submit your application through the platform
