About AI Training Work
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. People with professional expertise review model responses, test reasoning, identify errors, and provide feedback that helps AI systems become more accurate, useful, and responsible.
In this project, your civil engineering judgment will help models handle technical questions, calculations, assumptions, constraints, safety considerations, and professional communication more effectively.
The Role
OpenTrain is seeking a Civil Engineering AI Evaluation Specialist to review, challenge, and refine advanced model outputs on civil engineering topics. You will assess AI-generated responses for technical accuracy, completeness, clarity, logical soundness, and sound engineering judgment.
The work includes realistic scenarios, calculations, design questions, and code-informed reasoning. You will evaluate content across structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, environmental, and construction topics, including structural loads, soil behavior, slope stability, drainage, pavement systems, reinforced concrete, steel design, and construction sequencing.
- Remote contractor engagement
- Short-term project
- Estimated commitment of 20 hours per week
- Part-time schedule
- English fluency required
- Pay range of $45-$100 per hour
What You'll Do
You will provide structured, technically grounded feedback that helps improve how AI models explain assumptions, limitations, calculations, and professional judgment. Your reviews should reflect sound engineering principles, safety awareness, and responsible technical communication.
- Evaluate AI-generated civil engineering responses for technical accuracy, logical soundness, completeness, and clarity.
- Challenge models with realistic engineering scenarios, calculations, design questions, and reasoning tasks.
- Review and refine AI-generated prompts, explanations, and step-by-step solutions.
- Identify factual errors, flawed assumptions, missing constraints, unsafe recommendations, and incomplete reasoning.
- Assess model performance across structural, geotechnical, transportation, water resources, environmental, and construction topics.
- Help shape communication standards for technical civil engineering content.
- Evaluate technical calculations, assumptions, and code-informed reasoning.
Requirements
This is an expert-level opportunity for a civil engineering professional with substantial experience applying engineering fundamentals in real-world work. A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline is required.
- At least 4 years of professional civil engineering experience.
- Experience in infrastructure design, structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, transportation engineering, water resources, environmental engineering, or construction management.
- Strong command of statics, mechanics of materials, soil mechanics, hydraulics, materials behavior, load paths, and construction methods.
- Ability to review AI-generated engineering explanations for accuracy and completeness.
- Strong judgment regarding safety, constraints, and professional standards in civil engineering.
- Master's degree, PhD, PE licensure, or equivalent advanced professional credentials strongly preferred.
- Experience with AI data training, annotation, or model evaluation is a strong plus.
Who Should Apply
Apply if you can confidently distinguish technically sound civil engineering reasoning from plausible but unsafe, incomplete, or incorrect model output. Professionals with deep experience in infrastructure, structures, geotechnical work, transportation, water resources, environmental engineering, or construction are encouraged to consider the project.
The role is designed for candidates who can communicate technical feedback clearly in English and apply professional engineering judgment across varied civil engineering scenarios.
- Experienced civil engineers seeking flexible, remote project work
- Technical specialists comfortable evaluating calculations and design reasoning
- Professionals interested in helping shape how advanced AI communicates engineering concepts
- Candidates with prior AI training, annotation, or model evaluation experience
