About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Contributors create examples, review model outputs, and provide structured feedback that helps modern AI systems reason more accurately and reliably. This role focuses on strategic gameplay, rule interpretation, and complex decision-making.

The Role

OpenTrain AI is seeking an experienced Board Game AI Training Expert to help train and evaluate next-generation AI models. You will apply expertise in board games, game mechanics, strategic reasoning, probability, and complex rule systems to create, review, and evaluate high-quality datasets.

Your work will support challenging tasks involving game logic, decision-making, strategic planning, rule interpretation, and scenario analysis. You will help AI systems develop stronger reasoning capabilities through carefully designed prompts, rubrics, benchmarks, and evaluations.

  • Experience level: Intermediate
  • Assignment type: Contractor
  • Duration: 2 months
  • Workload: At least 4 hours per day and 20 hours per week
  • Required availability: 4 hours of overlap with PST
  • Work location: Worldwide
  • Working language: English

What You'll Do

You will create and assess game-based reasoning content while helping project teams improve dataset quality and evaluation methods. The work requires careful analysis of strategic scenarios and precise documentation of rules, reasoning, and model performance.

  • Create and review game-based reasoning tasks designed to evaluate AI systems.
  • Analyze board game scenarios, strategic decision trees, and rule-based systems.
  • Evaluate AI-generated responses for correctness, consistency, and reasoning quality.
  • Develop prompts, rubrics, and evaluation guidelines for board game and strategy-focused tasks.
  • Identify logical errors, rule violations, and flawed reasoning in AI outputs.
  • Contribute to benchmark creation and quality assurance processes for AI evaluation projects.
  • Collaborate with project teams to improve dataset quality and evaluation methodologies.

Required Qualifications

You should bring substantial experience with board games or related strategy-focused environments, along with strong analytical and written communication abilities. A bachelor's degree in one of the listed fields or a related analytical field is required.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Cognitive Science, Game Design, Philosophy, Economics, or a related analytical field.
  • At least 2 years of professional or semi-professional experience in board game design, playtesting, tabletop game communities, or related strategy-focused environments.
  • Strong understanding of logic, probabilistic reasoning, game mechanics, and complex rule systems.
  • Background in game theory, behavioral economics, decision science, or formal logic.
  • Familiarity with modern board games, trading card games, tabletop RPGs, strategy games, or competitive game systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written communication skills.

Helpful Background

The following experience is helpful but is not listed as required. It can support work involving AI evaluation, structured quality review, benchmark development, and rules-based reasoning.

  • Prior experience in data annotation, AI training, prompt engineering, quality assurance, game design, puzzle design, or rules-based system analysis.
  • Experience creating evaluation rubrics, benchmark datasets, or quality assurance frameworks.
  • Experience with Python, SQL, or data analysis tools.
  • Experience working on RLHF, model evaluation, synthetic data generation, or LLM benchmarking projects.
  • Familiarity with recently released strategy or tabletop games and the ability to quickly learn new rule systems.

Who Should Apply

This opportunity is well suited to board game designers, playtesters, strategy-game specialists, tabletop community contributors, and analytical professionals who can explain complex rules and evaluate reasoning with precision. You should be comfortable identifying subtle mistakes, documenting evaluation standards, and assessing whether an AI response is logically consistent and correct.

  • You understand board game mechanics, strategic reasoning, and complex rule systems.
  • You can evaluate AI model responses for correctness and logical consistency.
  • You have experience creating game-based reasoning tasks or evaluation rubrics.
  • You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills in a game design context.
  • You can write clear prompts, evaluation guidelines, and supporting documentation.
