About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for finding and building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help specialists find paid projects, build a unified portfolio of AI training work, and grow a durable freelance career without rebuilding proof-of-work on every platform.

Why AI training matters — and why your expertise matters

AI training (also called data labeling or human feedback work) is the human side of building intelligent systems. Experts like you shape how models respond to safety-sensitive topics by providing careful, evidence-based judgments.

These projects are 100% remote and often flexible, making them a great way to apply specialized knowledge part-time while directly improving how AI systems handle biological risk and dual-use scenarios.

The role

OpenTrain is hiring a Biosecurity & Synthetic Biology Expert to support AI training focused on Biosecurity Risk Evaluation. You will evaluate model outputs and source materials using established biorisk frameworks and clearly document evidence-based decisions.

This is a part-time contractor role (estimated ~20 hours/week) for 1–3 months, remote and open worldwide. Pay is $50–$90 per hour (project earnings estimated at $8,000–$14,400 depending on schedule and duration). Work language: English.

  • Labeling type: Evaluation / Rating and Red-teaming style analysis of model outputs
  • Data type: Text (model responses, scenarios, supporting sources)
  • Employment: Contractor, part-time; flexible scheduling

What you'll do day-to-day

Your reviews and written feedback help models learn how to identify and handle biological risks safely. Tasks emphasize consistency, documentation, and clear rationale so model developers can act on your judgments.

  • Evaluate model outputs against project rubrics and provide evidence-based ratings
  • Review source materials and compare them to model responses and project guidelines
  • Write clear explanations of your judgments so feedback can improve model behavior
  • Perform red-team style safety reviews and false-negative analysis to identify risky outputs
  • Maintain quality and consistency across repeated review tasks

Requirements

This role requires real-world expertise in biosecurity, biorisk management, or synthetic biology. While the listing is marked entry level for OpenTrain’s experience taxonomy, the project expects deep subject-matter knowledge and practical familiarity with relevant governance and laboratory practices.

  • Deep experience in biosecurity, biorisk management, or synthetic biology
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety protocols and dual-use research governance
  • Ability to design or review biological threat scenarios and risk taxonomies
  • Experience with safety review, false-negative analysis, or red-team style assessments
  • Fluency in English, strong written communication, and meticulous attention to detail
  • Comfort following detailed rubrics and working independently as a remote contractor
