About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for building careers in AI training and data labeling. We connect skilled contributors with specialized projects that shape how AI systems learn and behave, and OpenTrain AI is the hiring and contracting organization for this role.

Working through OpenTrain means you join a fast-growing industry where people with domain expertise earn flexible, remote work while directly improving how AI handles technical, safety-critical topics.

Why AI training matters for biomedical engineering

AI models learn from examples and feedback created by humans. In biomedical engineering, human review is essential to ensure technical soundness, correct unit handling, sensible assumptions, and patient safety when models discuss device design, biomaterials, imaging, or clinical signals.

This work helps models communicate uncertainty, identify verification needs, and avoid unsafe or misleading recommendations — work that has real impact on how AI supports healthcare engineering decisions.

The role

We are recruiting an experienced biomedical engineer to evaluate AI-generated responses on biomedical engineering topics. You will review technical answers, challenge reasoning, and provide structured feedback to improve model accuracy and safety.

This is a contract, part-time role for 20+ hours per week. Pay ranges from $40 to $100 USD per hour depending on expertise and task complexity.

  • Employment type: Contractor, Part-time
  • Time requirement: 20+ hours/week
  • Data type: Text; Label types: Evaluation rating, RLHF
  • Language: English

What you'll do day-to-day

Your main responsibility is to evaluate and refine AI outputs across biomedical engineering subfields. Reviews focus on technical accuracy, clarity, defensible reasoning, and safety-sensitive content.

  • Evaluate AI answers for accuracy, completeness, clarity, unit consistency, and defensible reasoning.
  • Challenge responses with realistic scenarios, calculations, and design/analysis tasks.
  • Review step-by-step solutions, assumptions, and interpretation of constraints.
  • Provide structured feedback on factual errors, unsafe recommendations, unsupported clinical claims, and invalid simplifications.
  • Advise how AI should explain risk, verification needs, and when to escalate to clinical or regulatory experts.

Requirements

You must meet the stated professional and educational qualifications and be comfortable critiquing technical AI outputs for safety and regulatory sensitivity.

  • 4+ years of professional biomedical engineering experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering or a closely related field (advanced credentials strongly preferred).
  • Hands-on background in medical devices, biomechanics, biomaterials, tissue engineering, bioinstrumentation, imaging systems, physiologic signals, clinical engineering, quality/regulatory, or manufacturing/validation.
  • Strong fundamentals: physiology for engineers, transport phenomena, material behavior in biological environments, biosignals, sensors, measurement systems, and systems modeling.
  • Comfort assessing technical assumptions, unit consistency, uncertainty, and safety considerations.
  • Experience with AI data training, annotation, red-teaming, or evaluating AI-generated technical content is a strong plus.

Helpful background

Familiarity with medical device quality and regulatory frameworks will help you spot unsafe or noncompliant recommendations and produce higher-value feedback to improve model behavior.

  • Familiarity with ISO 13485, IEC 60601, ISO 14971, FDA design controls, verification & validation, risk management, biocompatibility concepts, or clinical workflow constraints is useful.

Logistics and how to apply

This role accepts applicants from the countries listed in the posting and requires English fluency. You will work remotely as a contractor; hours and task volume are flexible but expected to average 20+ hours/week.

Compensation is paid hourly in USD. OpenTrain AI handles contracting and project assignments; your evaluation work will use text-based review and RLHF-style rating tasks.

  • Eligible countries include: VN, TL, TH, SG, PK, PH, NP, MY, LK, KH, ID, BT, BD, IN, BR, DE, US.
  • Pay range: $40–$100 USD per hour (final rate depends on experience and task).
  • Labeling format: Text evaluation and RLHF-style ratings.
