  • Work on specialized AI training projects that value subject-matter expertise.

About AI Training Work

AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Modern models improve when experts review outputs, prepare high-quality examples, write evaluation criteria, and identify reasoning that sounds convincing but does not hold up to expert scrutiny.

This role focuses on text-based evaluation and response writing. Your scientific judgment will help assess whether AI systems produce accurate, well-supported life sciences work and whether they demonstrate meaningful improvement.

  • Contribute directly to the development of frontier AI models.
  • Apply research judgment to evaluation, instruction writing, and model feedback.

The Role

OpenTrain AI is recruiting a senior Biochemistry and Life Sciences Domain Expert for a six-month initial engagement supporting frontier AI model training. The work is hybrid in the Bay Area, California, and the role description calls for a 40-hour weekly commitment. Structured listing details indicate a 20+ hour weekly requirement and contractor, part-time engagement, so applicants should be prepared to clarify scheduling expectations during the process.

  • Initial engagement: 6 months.
  • Work arrangement: Hybrid in the Bay Area, California.
  • Location: United States.
  • Language: English.
  • Pay: $65-$105 per hour.
  • Engagement type: Contractor and part-time listing.

What You'll Do

You will review life sciences knowledge-work tasks and model outputs, create rigorous training materials, and help establish benchmarks that measure genuine progress. The work combines scientific depth, careful writing, and precise evaluation.

  • Vet life sciences tasks and model outputs for quality, thin reasoning, unsupported causal claims, and answers that would not withstand peer review.
  • Write high-quality instruction specifications and produce golden solutions to life sciences problems.
  • Define new tasks that reflect how life sciences research is performed in practice.
  • Design challenging evaluation sets and help build domain-specific skills and tools with the research team.
  • Calibrate standards with client researchers and specialists in adjacent fields.

Required Qualifications

This is a senior specialist role requiring advanced academic training, substantive research experience, professional experience with large language models, and the ability to communicate scientific feedback with precision.

  • PhD in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, or a closely related life science.
  • At least 4 years of substantive research experience at a recognized institution, such as a university, academic medical center, national lab, or industrial research organization.
  • Senior-level progression as a Senior Scientist, Staff Scientist, Research Scientist, Instructor, Principal Investigator, faculty member, or equivalent.
  • Hands-on use of large language models in professional work.
  • Excellent written communication and the ability to give precise, structured feedback.
  • Willingness to work hybrid in the Bay Area, California.
  • Availability to commit to 40 hours per week for the six-month initial engagement.

Helpful Background

The following experience can strengthen your application, especially when it demonstrates the ability to evaluate sophisticated scientific reasoning and communicate research standards clearly.

  • A record of peer-reviewed publications, preferably first-author work in strong journals.
  • Specialization in molecular and cell biology.
  • Experience in biochemistry and structural biology.
  • Experience in immunology and immuno-oncology.
  • Experience in genetics and genomics.
  • Experience in neuroscience or systems biology.

Build Your AI Training Career

Expert knowledge is increasingly important as AI systems take on complex scientific work. Through OpenTrain, you can discover opportunities in the growing AI training industry, build a profile that reflects your expertise, and apply to projects where your judgment helps shape cutting-edge models.

  • Apply your life sciences research background to practical AI development.
  • Use OpenTrain to build a durable profile in AI training and data labeling.
