About OpenTrain

OpenTrain is the #1 platform for building careers in AI training and data labeling. We help contributors discover projects, build a lasting portfolio of AI-training experience, and grow freelance careers working on the human side of modern AI.

This role is hired and managed directly by OpenTrain. You will join a distributed team of reviewers and contributors who shape how AI systems learn from human-reviewed examples.

About AI training work

AI training (data labeling and human feedback) is the human foundation behind modern machine learning. Contributors annotate, evaluate, and improve model outputs — work that is remote, flexible, and accessible for people with technical skills or domain experience.

As a Bash QA Lead you will apply your shell-scripting expertise to evaluate AI-generated code, improve reviewer consistency, and help contributors write safe, portable scripts that real systems can run.

The role

You will lead quality assurance for Bash and shell-scripting tasks across OpenTrain projects. This contractor role focuses on reviewing Bash scripts and trainer/QA contributions for correctness, safety, portability, and rubric adherence.

Your work will include giving precise written feedback, maintaining guidance docs, supporting onboarding and calibration, and identifying recurring problems to improve overall contributor quality.

What you'll do

  • Review Bash scripts, CLI workflows, automation snippets, debugging responses, and explanations for correctness and safety.
  • Check for quoting mistakes, non-portable syntax, destructive commands, missing error handling, and hallucinated flags.
  • Evaluate trainer and QA submissions against project rubrics and provide clear, actionable written feedback.
  • Support onboarding by maintaining style guides, FAQs, examples, trackers, honeypots, and calibration materials.
  • Monitor quality trends, surface recurring issues, and propose process improvements to increase consistency.

Requirements

You must have strong Bash and shell-scripting fundamentals and hands-on experience with Linux or Unix systems. Clear written English and meticulous attention to detail are essential for providing helpful feedback to contributors.

  • Expert-level Bash/shell scripting: quoting, conditionals, loops, functions, pipes, redirection, exit codes.
  • Practical background in automation, DevOps, systems administration, CI/CD, or technical support workflows.
  • Ability to identify unsafe commands, destructive operations, non-portable syntax, and hallucinated flags.
  • Comfort with Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, GitHub, dashboards, and project trackers.
  • Experience evaluating AI-generated shell scripts, rubric-based review, or code QA is a strong plus.

Schedule, location, and pay

This is a US-only remote contractor role. Estimated workload is about 20 hours per week for an engagement of roughly 1–3 months.

Pay is hourly up to $65/hour (PAY_PER_HOUR, USD). Employment types: contractor, part-time.

Who should apply and how it works

Apply if you have expert Bash skills, experience reviewing code, and enjoy mentoring contributors to raise review quality. This role fits senior practitioners who want flexible, project-based work shaping how AI models learn from shell-scripting examples.

OpenTrain manages hiring and contracting. If your profile matches, you will be asked to demonstrate shell-review skills and provide clear sample feedback as part of onboarding and calibration.

  • This role is for applicants located in the United States only.
  • Work is remote and contractor-based; you will coordinate with contributors and reviewers across chat and shared docs.
