About AI Training and Software Evaluation
AI training is the human side of building artificial intelligence. Engineers, reviewers, and other specialists create examples, test systems, and evaluate model performance so AI can become more capable and reliable.
In this project, your backend expertise will help create realistic development environments and challenging tasks that test AI models on backend software engineering problems.
Work on cutting-edge AI systems
Apply practical engineering judgment to model evaluation
No previous AI experience is required
The Backend Engineer Role
We are looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to contribute to a project focused on training and evaluating next-generation AI systems. You will create, debug, and assess real-world software environments that challenge AI models with backend development tasks.
This is an intermediate-level contract role for someone who enjoys solving complex problems, working in unfamiliar codebases, and communicating technical reasoning clearly.
Compensation: $65–$120 per hour
Typical rate shown: $92.50 per hour
Contract position
Fluent English proficiency required
AI experience is not required
What You'll Do
You will combine hands-on backend development with code review and AI evaluation. Your work will include building reliable technical environments, creating reference solutions, and assessing whether software submissions are correct, clear, and high quality.
Build reinforcement learning environments for backend software engineering tasks
Create APIs, database logic, and backend features
Debug backend bugs, data-handling issues, and performance bottlenecks
Optimize existing backend code and database queries
Work with Python, Java, Go, Rust, C++, or TypeScript
Create reproducible development environments and reference solutions
Document technical reasoning and development decisions
Review code and technical submissions for correctness, quality, and clarity
Requirements
You should have at least one year of hands-on backend development experience and strong practical knowledge of at least one supported programming language. Success in this role also requires careful debugging, strong technical communication, and comfort navigating unfamiliar systems.
1+ year of hands-on backend development experience
Strong experience with Python 3, Java, Go, Rust, C++, or TypeScript
Solid understanding of API design
Experience with SQL or NoSQL databases
Understanding of data structures and backend development
Strong debugging and root-cause analysis skills
Ability to work comfortably with unfamiliar codebases
Strong technical communication and documentation skills
Who Should Apply
This opportunity is a strong fit for backend engineers who enjoy building reliable software, investigating difficult bugs, and evaluating technical solutions. An interest in AI and emerging technologies is welcome, but your engineering ability is the primary qualification.
