About AI training work

AI training (also called data labeling or annotation) is the human side of machine intelligence: people create and refine the examples that teach models to understand speech, text, images, and more. These roles are often remote, flexible, and accessible to people with language fluency or domain knowledge rather than formal software-engineering experience.

As an audio linguist you will provide the real-world recordings and linguistic judgments that speech models learn from — helping improve recognition, pronunciation modeling, and natural-sounding output.

The role

OpenTrain is recruiting Arabic Audio Linguists to support the development of next-generation AI speech systems. This is a project-based contractor role for contributors who can record high-quality Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) audio and perform careful linguistic annotation and evaluation.

Work involves audio data collection and evaluation tasks (transcription, evaluation/rating, and recording) using the project's chosen tools (). Tasks will emphasize phonetics, pronunciation, and intonation.

  • Employment type: Contractor, part-time.
  • Time commitment: 20+ hours per week (flexible scheduling).
  • Data type: Audio; label types: Transcription, Evaluation/Rating, Data Collection.

What you'll do

  • Record clear, high-quality audio clips in Modern Standard Arabic to build robust speech models.
  • Assess and annotate phonetic, pronunciation, and intonation features with linguistic accuracy.
  • Evaluate automatic speech recognition outputs and provide detailed feedback on errors and patterns.
  • Collaborate with the project team to refine data collection processes and documentation.
  • Maintain organized records of recording sessions and follow strict confidentiality and data-quality protocols.
  • Participate in team discussions to improve annotation guidelines and workflows.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the essential skills below. All requirements come from the project brief; do not apply unless you meet the listed criteria.

  • Native-level proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), with exceptional written and verbal command (language: ar).
  • Strong understanding of phonetics, phonology, and the nuances of Arabic pronunciation.
  • Comfortable using recording devices and basic audio software to produce clear speech samples.
  • High attention to detail for listening, annotating, and evaluating speech data accurately.
  • Able to collaborate effectively in a remote, virtual environment and follow project guidelines.
  • Commitment to quality, confidentiality, and continuous improvement in AI training workflows.

Helpful background

  • Prior experience with AI or speech data collection projects is a plus.
  • Familiarity with linguistic annotation tools and standards helps you ramp up faster.
  • Interest in language technologies, speech research, or AI is helpful but not required.
