About AI training work in anthropology

AI training is the human side of building intelligent systems — people prepare and evaluate examples so models learn to produce accurate, ethical, and useful outputs. Anthropology-focused AI training asks specialists to check cultural framing, methodology, terminology, and sensitivity in model responses about cultures, archaeology, and human evolution.

This work is remote, often flexible, and lets you apply academic or heritage-sector skills (ethnography, museum work, field methods) directly to shaping how AI systems talk about people and cultures.

The role

As an Anthropology Quality Assurance Lead you will review AI-generated anthropology content and the work of trainers and QAs against detailed rubrics. You will flag issues of accuracy, stereotyping, ethnocentrism, outdated terminology, weak context, or ethically problematic framing; provide precise written feedback; maintain documentation and style guides; and help keep quality standards consistent across remote teams.

This is a part-time contractor position requiring 20+ hours per week, paid hourly at $65 USD. Candidates must be based in the United States and work in English. Labeling tasks are text-based and include evaluation ratings and RLHF-style review.

What you'll do

• Review anthropology explanations, ethnographic summaries, cultural comparisons, archaeology discussions, and human evolution content against project rubrics.
• Identify stereotyping, ethnocentrism, outdated terminology, weak context, and ethically problematic framing.
• Provide structured, written feedback to trainers and QAs and help resolve recurring quality issues.
• Maintain and update style guides, FAQs, calibration tasks, trackers, onboarding materials, and examples.
• Support onboarding, calibration, activation, and follow-up for remote contributors who are inactive or not performing consistently.
• Communicate guideline updates and help ensure consistent application of rubrics across reviewer teams.

Requirements

• Anthropology degree or closely related academic background in anthropology, archaeology, or cultural anthropology.
• Experience with ethnography, archaeology, fieldwork, museum or heritage work, or related academic workflows.
• Ability to evaluate work against detailed rubrics and apply cultural sensitivity, methodological rigor, and ethical awareness.
• Strong written English and confidence communicating clear, constructive feedback to remote teams.
• Ability to identify stereotyping, ethnocentrism, and weak contextualization in text.

Helpful qualifications

• Familiarity with cultural relativism, ethnographic methods, kinship, ritual, representation, and human evolution.
• Experience leading or supporting remote researchers, reviewers, annotators, or QA teams.
• Familiarity with AI training, LLM evaluation, RLHF, or rubric-based review workflows (this is a plus, not a strict requirement).
• Comfort using tools such as Discord, Google Sheets, Google Docs, trackers, dashboards, and project management systems.

This role is a contractor, part-time position: expect 20+ hours per week, paid on an hourly basis at $65 USD. Tasks are text-based evaluation and RLHF-style review; you will work remotely and communicate in English with distributed contributors.
