The role

OpenTrain is hiring a Senior FreeCAD Mechanical CAD Reviewer to support a contract project focused on parametric CAD modeling, assembly design, technical drawings, and engineering quality assurance. This is a remote, part-time contractor role requiring 20+ hours per week and is open worldwide.

Compensation is hourly in USD with a posted range of $30–$100 per hour (up to $100/hr). Work will involve hands-on modeling in FreeCAD (or equivalent parametric tools), reviewing CAD outputs for manufacturability, and using Python scripting where appropriate to automate CAD tasks.

What you'll do

You will create, modify, validate, and review parametric FreeCAD models and assemblies to ensure accuracy, manufacturability, and production readiness. Expect hands-on CAD work plus documentation and feedback aimed at improving designs and processes.

  • Build and validate detailed parametric CAD models in FreeCAD.
  • Develop and optimize mechanical assemblies ensuring proper component integration.
  • Apply GD&T and DFM practices to improve manufacturability and quality.
  • Produce technical drawings and manufacturing documentation for downstream use.
  • Review models and drawings for issues, completeness, and production readiness.
  • Provide constructive feedback on design intent, accuracy, and process improvements.
  • Use Python scripting to automate repetitive CAD workflows and streamline modeling tasks.

Requirements

Candidates must meet the stated technical requirements and be able to work independently and communicate clearly in a remote project environment. All substantive requirements below come from the project brief.

  • 2+ years in mechanical engineering, product design, or industrial engineering with parametric CAD experience.
  • Advanced FreeCAD experience or equivalent parametric CAD platform experience.
  • Proven experience building robust, reusable parametric models.
  • Strong working knowledge of GD&T and DFM principles.
  • Experience producing technical drawings and manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience performing engineering QA on CAD models and judging production readiness.
  • Python scripting experience for CAD automation is highly advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills for remote collaboration.
